I think we may have caught our first real Tsubasa Chronicle-reference. At least, if you ignore Fye’s staff who keeps showing up at random places. Remember last episode, in which Yuuko was away for a long trip? This episode shows a small shot of her, while on a boat, heading for a strange, rocky island, wearing her Tsubasa Chronicle-dress. This probably means that somewhere in the future of Tsubasa Chronicle, Yuuko and black Mokona will be coming in action, to help Syaoran and Sakura. I can’t wait for it. ^^

Anyway, about the real meat of the episode. I’m very delighted to say that this was the best xxxHolic episode yet! The previous episode has been building up for this perfectly. It’s just so sad. I think the creators saved so much time for this on purpose, and it works out awesomely. I really thought that Watanuki would listen to Yuuko, and stop seeing the woman. Instead, it gets even better. Watanuki feels so much for the woman that he actually goes to meet her, even when he knows that he’s going to die if he keeps seeing her! Talk about awesomeness!

Maru and Moro also were exceptionally cute when it seemed that even though they were soulless bodies, they id feel sympathy for Watanuki. They actually tried to take care of him, and at the end of the episode, when Watanuki was resting, they actually tried to be very quiet, in order to not wake him up. This episode also was meant in order to bring Watanuki and Doumeki closer together. After all, when Domeki shot the woman, he did it on his own. Yuuko didn’t tell him anything that time.

This also was one of the few times in which Yuuko decided not to explain certain events to Watanuki. It also happened with the snowball fight, though that was because of different reasons than during this episode. I’ve actually got a small, totally speculated theory about the identity of the woman. What if she was Watanuki’s mother, who took on a different form in order to meet him, and somehow swore not to give away her identity? Still, I’ll say it again: this is just something that came up in my head for some strange reason.

Now that this, and most other series I’m watching are coming to an end, I can’t help but wonder how this series will end. I wonder whether xxxHolic’s ending will be able to stand out in some kind of way. I think that there are two possible options: Watanuki stays with Yuuko, or Watanuki gets cured and cuts ties with Yuuko. Regarding Himawari and Doumeki, I don’t think that their relationship towards Watanuki will change much. They likely continue to be friends. The Vestal Sprite could go all kinds of directions, though. That’s why I think that she’ll be a major actor in the actual ending.

Iirc, Yuuko and Mokona’s absence in this story was because they were making Ashura and Yasha (from Tsubasa’s Shura/Shara arc) into gods, hence that has already happened in the Tsubasa anime.

Since next episode was called a ‘side story’ in the preview, I don’t see xxxHOLiC getting a conclusive ending, especially as there is enough manga material left for a 13 episode second season.

  2. TCoFA says:

I assume they’ll be a bit less predictable than letting the woman turn out to be Watanuki’s mother. On the other hand, I found the entire episode a little too predictable. Maro and Moro were nice though, but I think you overrated this episode.

Karura: Okay, so that’s what they were doing. Shame that we didn’t get to see black Mokona when it happened in Tsubasa Chronicle. I think that there will be some kind of half-conclusing ending, though. The creators did alter some things from the original manga (like how they changed the day of Valentine).

Wait… xxxHolic has only 24 episodes?

I didn’t realize that one… that means that I’ve just been watching the series conclusion. O_o

  5. Nicole says:

Awsome. Do you know where i can watch the episodes subbed?

  6. psgels psgels says:

Just on any regular bittorrent site like Tokyo Toshokan?

Maybe a little thread necromancy here, but I’d like to point out that we discover why Watanuki can go to the shop in this episode. His need is loneliness. I had been wondering what it was since we found out Doumeki couldn’t enter.

Thats one of the reasons I stopped picking up anime dvds at animecons, started noticing too many of them being sold were on bluray and I don’t have a bluray dvd player and apparently I can’t use my computer for it either…

I managed to get something free that can play them, but it isn’t the best. Yep, here I am trying to give something back to anime and I am forced to go though this bullshit. No wonder everyone pirating.

Well isn’t this fantastic. I go and buy anime blu-ray’s thinking that if I have a blu-ray drive then I can play blu-ray dvds. Low and below apparently you can’t without software. And they is no real working free software that plays blu-rays. So I need to pay money, to get a goddamn program, so I can use my goddamn Blu-ray drive. Serious bullshit sir.

Part of the reason I bring this up is because I recall speaking to a Negima fan that told me I didn’t give the series enough of a chance because I dropped it 7 volumes in and because it hadn’t even begun.

The four/five episode rule maybe it doesn’t really apply to long running shounens? Because they don’t really get started till much much further in

The point is I feel that really I didn’t try, didn’t really give the genre any chance really before hating on it, not enough of one. Especially given how most of these don’t get going, long past the points where I stopped.

This literally was me at 12 watching dragonball Z, not even complete episodes, merely a few and deciding “This is shit” and for years after hating an entire genre based on that.

Apparently I never actually gave the genre a chance even at the very beginning I encountered it…given that those few dragonball z episodes were watched when I was young…

Naruto is pure Shonen and never pretended to be anything beyond entertainment for a younger male audience, so I don’t see why anyone would go out of their way to bash it. SAO was fun to take apart just to hear the cries of the dedicated fanbase, if nothing else, but that also loses its charm pretty fast since for every head you cut off two more take its place.

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 20

This episode wasn’t quite what I expected. It is true that I didn’t get the big fight I was looking for, though there were clashes going on. However this still was a very good episode. So on the matters of Kirei, Rin, Lancer and Shinji it was all done perfectly. Well there was this weird […]

Knights of Sidonia S2 – 3-6

So far the focus has been pretty heavily on Tsumugi, the chimera. Who is strangely moefied. Its really odd to see what is essentially a giant  tentacled monster display the characteristics of a innocent cutsy little girl. Still she is to me one of the better characters of the show. Untainted by the negative aspects […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 19

Oh my god, I can’t believe that Archer is the future Shirou Emiya!….said no one who watched this episode. But yes the cat is out of the bag. Archer is Shirou turned cynical and jaded after playing executioner for a couple of decades. There was a small bit showing how he contracted with the world […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 18

Well here it is. The name drop. The very thing the route is called after. And its….its…kinda bad. Of all the places to make the first visual blunder, why did it have to be here? Knights of Sidonia S2 – 1-2

Even after a long break its nice to see that Sidonia hasn’t lost its edge. The story is still engaging and CG robot battles dynamic. However…was the CG this bad before? I remember it took some time to get used to the CG animation of the last season but this seems especially stiff. The easy […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 16

So at the start of this episode featured the big moment of Gilgamesh ripping out Illya’s heart and it was surprisingly underwhelming. It is true that in context this makes more sense and fits his character better. But it is a little disappointing. Strangely this wasn’t how it was in the visual novel and this […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 15

The word that encompasses this episode in a nutshell would be brutal. Whether you love her or hate her, I say few would believe that Illya deserved this fate. The tragedy is ever more pungent if you know the full details of her past. Anime only viewers may not get the most out of this […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 14

As a reader of the Fate/stay night visual novel I can confirm that the majority of this episode was anime original content. However instead of being about castors history like I thought, it’s of his backstory with her first master. In all honestly making the episode be about her history with Jason would have been […]

Shirobako Review – 80/100

Nerawareta Gakuen Review – 84/100

Let me talk a bit about Ryousuke Nakamura. For a long time, this guy was my hero. He started off as an assistant director to Monster, in my opinion a big reason why that series got such a ridiculously solid adaptation, and then in 2008 he came with the groundbreaking Mouryou no Hako. No TV-series […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]

Noucome! You do not want to know how long I have been waiting for a series like this. More than half a decade, at the very least. Finally a series comes along and puts the incredibly overused harem genre in its place. And it actually does it well. Thank you! So to elaborate: the harem […]

When Noitamina started airing two series per season, it was amazing. Yondemasuyo, Azazel-San Z Review – 82,5/100
