Short Synopsis: The new case: some ghosts have been hunting a very strange old mansion.
Good: Lots of characters this time. Should provide a nice twist.
Bad: MAI! Stop wandering around and actually start doing things for yourself!
Overall Enjoyment Value: 6.5/10

The next arc, and finally it looks like we’ve got another major arc which happens outside of a school-building. Right now, it seems that we’re dealing with two ghosts: a man and a woman. From the looks of it, they were heavily tortured before they died. Because of this, their spirits remained, even though they died. Right now, they’ve been kidnapping random people who entered the house. It seems that the mansion is in the possession of the former prime-minister. If not, than he’s at least involved in quite an important way, seeing that he’s the client.

Yasuhara pretends to be Naru-chan this time, since there seem to have been more psychics invited for research, some of which he doesn’t want to get involved with. I wonder who they might bee, as he never mentions them directly. But if I had to guess, it’s the British professor Davis who came over to Japan especially for this, along with his two rather incompetent assistants. Davis is just too perfect, while his assistants are just too stupid.

Lots of character-background also appeared this episode, right out of the blue. Suddenly, we learn the identity of the person who taught Naru-chan all about ghost hunting, Lin appears to be Chinese and Mai doesn’t have any parents left, so she’s living on her own. You’d wonder how she sustained herself before she broke Naru-chan’s camera.

So far, I’m not really expecting anything from this arc. Sure, the huge amount of characters is interesting, but I’m getting really pissed off at Mai now. She really needs to act for herself, and take initiative. Like mentioned before, it’s what made the fifth episode great and the other episodes lacking.

  1. I loved this episode, but I disagree on your theory that those two ghosts are now randomly kidnapping people. Because they were tortured and I don’t really see how those two are able to do something to different people. I believe that there is something far greater than that.
They do need help, that’s for sure but it doesn’t really make any sence for them to kidnap people.

Also I disagree on your critism about Mai. When you are dreaming, you often don’t remind the dream that you had, and I think Mai finds this dreams so shocking that she doesn’t want to believe it. Remember, she had already cases with the death, it killed both her parents. But it does make sence because I was already wondering how on earth a high-scholer could just go to another school when her school wasn’t even finished. This does really make something clear.

Don’t be so harsh on your judgement on Mai. I believe it’s bugging you so much that you forget to enjoy the horrors and the greatness of this episode.

That’s indeed the problem. I watched up till episode 16 that way. But each time, the episodes lacked something. They just never lived up to the awesomeness of episode 5. After episode 17, I finally realized that this was because Mai turned into a damsel-in-distress when the third arc started. Don’t worry, I gave the show enough chances for this, but I really think that Mai is ruining this anime for me.

the house looks like a house that an ecentric rich guy built that actually exists in america. and there’s another famous house that had a secret basement where a guy would kidnap people to be cut up and murdered in his house. my first impression was that this house seems to be inspired by those two cases put together

i actually think this arc might turn out good

Just like timelessdreams said, i think the show is still gripping and mai’s not stealing the show, and IMO this arc will be better than the 2nd arc, in terms of intensity and the mystery. I think the focus is on Mai (on last, and this arc also) as she’s actually the one that can ‘converse’ (in a way) with the situation at hand, because of her power.

  5. psgels psgels says:

Well, I’ll see if the next arc will turn out to be a great one. It’s not like I’ve given up on the series. :P

Still, in the second arc, Mai really had to fight for her life, and those of others too. I’m missing that a bit in the past few arcs.

  6. Elizabeth says:

Seriously, I know she is a girl, and normally what girls think isn’t important in some cases, but honestly, Mai, tell them your dreams. They would be good with a lot of situations if she’d learn what’s best for the group and tell them what she sees. Otherwise, Cool, great episode. Favorite Show!

@Aidan @Mario I noticed you guys use different dimensions for your screenshots. I set mine to 242*136 which is the same aspect ratio as a 1080p image (16:9). How did y’all end up with those sizes?

Nice! Looking forward to the reviews. Some nice fighting scenes besides the build up of the story. I just hope they don’t play just this one tune all the time ;)

Berserk(2016) – 04 [Epiphany]

I wanted to start off by apologizing for the late review, as well as giving some general information and my overall impression of the new series. I’ve been a Berserk fan for quite a while, and both the 97’ series and the Berserk manga are among my top 5 anime/manga of all time. I was […]

Neon Genesis Evangelion – 02

Turns out that our boy Shinji is after all THE ONE, akin to Neo in the Matrix or every main mecha hero for that matter. He has been chosen, he must therefore use such strength and heart and wits as he has. Sound like I’m complaining, right? Well, I’m not because I think this is […]

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei – 04

Well after a decisive defeat after assaulting the enemy headquarters, Illya and her newly united crew decide to hang around the school. The main bulk of the episode was dedicated to a fight between Chloe and Illya while other parts were mainly the characters clarifying the situation. The main reason behind the fight was Chloe […]

Mob Psycho 100 – 02/03

This may be a surprise to some so I better start this with an explanation. As you know I originally planned to cover Berserk this season and have put up reviews of the last two episodes. However due to Berserks rather disappointing quality, my desire to cover it has vanished. I doubt anyone wants to […]

orange – 04

Orange takes it very slowly this week, even slower than its standard. Indeed, we can summarize the plot of the first 15 minutes just by one sentence: After Kakeru dating with another girl, Naho feels brokenhearted and avoids Kakeru like a plague. Which actually makes sense. After all, the guy already had a girlfriend so […]

Thunderbolt Fantasy – 03

With this episode we basically get an idea where the show will head for the rest of the series and I pretty much enjoy the direction they taking so far. Of course it makes sense that in order to get past those obstacles, the band needs to ally with others who are most suitable for […]

Fate Kaleid Liner PRISMA ILLYA 3rei!! - 03 2

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei – 03

Plenty of action this week as we have faceoffs between Beatrice and Illya with Gil and Angelica firing legendary weapons back and forth. I wish there was a bit more fight animation here as while it was the same in the manga, it’s still a shame to have the scene cut away just when the […]

Seeing as things didn’t quite go to plan for Avilio last episode, it’s now time for him to prove his innocence to Nero. Avilio is playing his cards right and things would have gone to plan if it wasn’t for the man who lead them to Fango before. He states out of curiosity that he […]

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 17

While I did enjoy this episode and think that some interesting things have been brought up, I must admit that even my patience is starting to run out. I blame this mostly on the fact that I am watching this weekly instead of binge watching it all as the progression in these episodes has slowed […]

Legend of Legacy Review – 80/100

Oh Square Enix, this is the kind of avant-garde work you need to do. Developed by Furyu with the people behind SaGa, and written by Masato Kato of Chrono Trigger, I knew I was in for a unique game right from the start. But its gameplay is certainly divisive and for good reason, as this […]

My Life as a Courgette (2016) Movie Review – 82/100

It’s never easy to make a good family’s animation. For movies aim at adults, the filmmakers can easily get themselves loose, go crazy and the audience can still get it. Flying witch Review – 86/100

As I mentioned in one of my weekly posts, most of the reason why a slice-of-life anime show don’t work well is not because there’s nothing happen, but more because the cast isn’t interesting enough or the show tends to repeat the things that we already know. I’m happy to say that this is not […]

Mayoiga Review – 78/100

Mayoiga has to be one of the most misunderstood shows in recent years. On a surface, the premise alone has a lot of potential. The idea behind putting 30 people, each of them has very different set of personalities, together in a bus to a mysterious lost village, in order to start over new life […]
