Oh my god… I’m speechless. I know I have been whining against this series, but that doesn’t matter for this episode. All I know that these were 20 of the most disturbing minutes of anime I’ve seen. Let me warn you: do not watch this episode if you can’t stand gore. I still can’t call this series great, but damn… this episode was so worth it.

I’m going to keep this entry short, because even though it was an awesome episode, it’s also one that I’d like to forget as soon as possible. In this sense, the gore is even worse than in Shigurui because there, you can see it coming. I didn’t expect for Kaiji to be this screwed in the mind to just cut off his ENTIRE EAR.

What was so disturbing about the first 19, then? But yeah, this was a good episode. My only complaint is that it seems as if Kaiji’s judgment would be affected by blood loss, meaning he wouldn’t be in the best position to think of traps or winning strategies. But, I like this series alot more than pgsels does in the first place.

Ack, that was a typo. I meant to say minutes. Oh, and I agree with that point of criticism, as it does feel a bit hard to believe that Kaiji will remain to think straight with that kind of bloodloss.

    i can’t figure something out

how come the next bet is another life or death one?

he’s already cut off his ear so how can he still gamble?Even if he’s talking about his other ear 18 mm isn’t life threatning,or do they put the drill at the same place it was on the other ear?

  4. psgels psgels says:

Yes, I think that he’s just going to bet his other ear, at the same distance that it was on before with 18 mm left. I mean, if he’s crazy enough to cut off one of his ears, then he probably doesn’t care about the other one anymore either.

=> Well, thanks for the false advertizing. This is nowhere as gory as Shigurui. I mean, you don’t even see a thing…

It doesn’t mean that this episode wasn’t the best of the series so far…

  6. kanami says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t say this episode was gory, I think the correct word would be… erm, brutal, maybe?

  7. I’m allergic to gore and this episode wasn’t really gory at all.

  8. Shippoyasha says:

Hmm. I still thought Shigurui’s was tad worse because of how ludicrously violent it all was. I always thought Kaiji was a great show but this one really nabbed that limelight. Now it needs to finish well.

  9. BlueYoshi says:

As much as I agree with the awesomeness of this episode, all we saw was A LOT of blood. No messy gore scenes in my opinion. MPD Psycho is where the gore is, if that makes any sense. xD

I didn’t think about the blood-loss until now. And you have to imagine the scenes after E-Card ends. The reality of Kaiji not having his ear will hit him pretty hard.

  10. Nephillim says:

People, people… have you considered that the part that he removed was just his OUTER ear? The pinna is just the receiver, as long as he doesn’t lose his INNER ear he’s fine. And that’s probably why they allow him to still play on.

I mean think of it this way: if he wagered the other ear, wouldn’t he bet MORE than 18mm?

  11. AG says:

One thing which I would like to see in this show is more on-the-street happenings, like how Kaiji was working in a shop.

Also, alhtough 9 million yen is not a back – breaking sum for the yakuza, do you think the they will actually pay up? Akagi showed that this is not always straightforward..

  12. Dorne says:

    @AG

They can cheat, but they won’t go back on their word. Kaiji must use this chance now.

    Go Kaiji!

@Mario: I notice you have Tinker tailor listed, I recently watched the night manager, a tv series based on a book by the same author. It was pretty suspenseful and Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddelston are great in it, makes me think Hiddelston should be the next Bond. Although its not as complex as tinker tailor and its more accessible, faster and spelled out.

@Bam: Going back to that Italian/French fairytale movie you and Mario talked about, anothe good fairytale-esque film is company of the wolves.

And I hate that lack of certainty come to think of it that I couldn’t be sure if I’d have found out something on my own.

It gets frustrating looking at local cinema listings and seeing nothing but superhero and pg rated horror films being the only ones showing and after waiting for anything ANYTHING outside those genres I find its never showing anywhere.

Either way it’s another marvel movie and I can safely say I have grown tired of them. I liked it for Spiderman and Ant man. Everything else…..meh.

Yeah, thanks dipshit on youtube. Just wanted to check the comment son a unrelated video and you go and shove that in my face. By the time I realized what it was, it was too late. I mean sure I likely would have figured it out myself but now I will never know for sure now will I? I MEAN WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!

So Civil War. Would have enjoyed it a lot more if it wasn’t for that goddamn editing during the fight scenes. I mean I want to watch the goddamn fight but you keep cutting all about the place and for some reason it feels like the footage is on fast forward. Also was spoiled regarding a twist at the end.

@Bam: just watched it and yes, I dig it. Quite a lot. Can’t wait to see his new film “Aquarius” (which from what I heard was cutting back from 6 hours raw material)

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 05

So Subaru has started his first repeat of this arc and at least this time he’s quick to come to terms with it. Though it is nice to see that he hasn’t shrugged off the progress he made getting wiped out without warning. But this time at least he’s at least making a plan and […]

Kiznaiver – 04

There are certain advantages to keeping your plot in the dark when storytelling. In the beginning stages when your audience is most attentive, if you manage to present questions they are interested in seeing answered then it provides a reason for the viewer to keep watching. However this tactic only continues to work as long […]

Flying witch – 04

Flying witch again delivers strong material this week and I actually think this is their best episode so far. Mostly because the 2 parts are well connected this week, and our new character Inuka is so natural and fit in like a glove, in addition they have an absurd and whimsical story to boost. I […]

Mayoiga – 05

We now back to the status quo on Mayoiga this week, as the group who left the village decided to come back, and the cliffhanger happened last week was never explained probably. I will say this upfront: this is not a good episode. We don’t learn much after it ends. We have even longer conversations […]

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress – 03

There are no brakes on the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress train even when it goes for a pit stop to pick up some water and say a prayer for the dead. While my fellow writers firmly believe that Koutetsujou no Kabaneri will disintegrate into a trainwreck […]

Bungou Stray Dogs – 04

Bungou Stray Dogs sure never get tired to showcase more new characters every week, and judging from the OP I’m certain that there are more to come. This week there are 3 more new faces and each of them is over the top in their own ways, but that turns out to be for good […]

Joker Game – 04

I am starting to get a little worried about Joker Game. After a very strong start it’s gone down in quality once it revealed it’s episodic format. This episode marks the lowest point of the series so far though I still don’t think of it as bad. Rather than focus on a member of the […]

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 04

Despite nearly dying our protagonist wakes up out of the loop and now in the mansion of a strange clown like fellow with twin maids. The mansion looks to be Emilia’s home and we not look to be in a new time loop as evidenced by the last scene where it appears that Subaru was […]

Kiznaiver – 03

So this episode was an introduction to our new seventh Kiznaiver who looks to be a roguish shut in with a pendent for self harm. Adding a masochist to a group that shares pain is certainly a dilemma but I wonder just how they plan to make use of him in the plot. Considering that […]

Schwarzesmarken – 65/100

Schwarzesmarken is a strange title in that it has a setting with fantastic potential yet the story is dampened by a rushed pacing and Missing characterisation. Despite this there are signs of a greater story under the hood and at times that story can shine despite haphazard adaption. The Stasi make for a great villain […]

Boku dake ga Inai Machi – 85/100

In the large reservoir of anime it is surprising just how few titles focus on the concept of time travel. There are of course titles which feature time travel but few that make it the core focus. So here we have Boku Machi or ERASED, a tale about a mangaka time traveling to his childhood […]

Gangsta. – 58/100

Gangsta is an anime with a lot of things going for it. A mature cast, gritty themes, a interesting setting and a trio of main characters who can carry the show. However due to a number of factors it never quite reached its potential. The main trio of characters are unconventional and quite interesting with […]

Gakkou Gurashi! – 80/100

Gakkou is one with a good facade as promotional material would have you believe it was some dime a dozen moe slice of life. I was one who wasn’t fooled by the cute cuddly exterior but I was truly surprised with just how good this anime ended up being. Gakkou is one of those rare […]

Little Witch Academia The Enchanted Parade – 81/100

I wonder when it was that a film being childish became a flaw. As a medium grows it takes steps to aim to mature itself and seek a more intellectual level of presenting entertainment. Animation did it as Anime aimed to explore terrontry that cartoons refuse to explore and video games only recently broke away […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks Review – 85/100

For a long time now this adaption has been the dreams of many a Fate fan with many believing it would never come to pass, but now that it is here is it everything that we dreamed? Short answer to this is no, long answer is nearly. I feel this show will have many divided […]

Shirobako Review – 80/100

When you see a harem anime and sigh as the breasts of the female lead jiggle with every step and wind that can flip a skirt it’s easy to forget that somewhere in Japan a group of people worked hard to get that jiggle right and draw each frame of animation. The hardships of the […]

Nerawareta Gakuen Review – 84/100

Let me talk a bit about Ryousuke Nakamura. For a long time, this guy was my hero. He started off as an assistant director to Monster, in my opinion a big reason why that series got such a ridiculously solid adaptation, and then in 2008 he came with the groundbreaking Mouryou no Hako. No TV-series […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]
