What a wonderful episode to close off the second series! This was hands down, the best episode ever since Shuurei got back from the Sa-clan. Thank you, Madhouse, for not leaving a bad taste at the end, while we have to wait who knows how many years for season three. The end of the episode closed off quite a few storylines, and yet it hinted that there’s still so much more to come. I really hope that the creators will realize this, and haven’t planned to end this series here.

But still, finally this series is over. For the past two years, it’s been my top-source of google-hits and out of all the series I’ve blogged, Saiunkoku Monogatari has received by far the most page-views, even comparing this to Death Note and Claymore. No other series also has as many posts as this one, although I guess that Jigoku Shoujo and Higurashi will come quite close when their third season finishes. Really, it’s sad to see this series gone now. I’ll put it on finished for now, until we get some real confirmations that a third season is under production.

It was also a delight to see Kouyuu and Shuuei back together. The two of them form such a great team with their banter. Suou also seems to have moved his family to the countryside, while he carries out some kind of mission for Kouki. We also learn that Anju is none other than Kouki’s ally. But the best part of the episode was of course seeing Ryuuki and Shuurei back together. It draws quite a parallel with episode 39 of the first season, which also ended with a similar series, but this time, Ryuuki’s development made that scene so different. Back then, he was just a weak little coward, screaming for Shuurei’s affection, but now he really seems to have accepted his task as an emperor. He’s now not just trying to become a good emperor because of Shuurei, and that’s what he realized when he was in the Ran-province.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to go write a review that does this series justice. ^^;

    hi! thanks for the review!
There must be a season 3! the story is to long to end only at season 2, don’t you agree?

  2. psgels says:

Lucy: well, the thing is: I agree, you agree, but the question remains whether the producers agree. Madhouse has been known for just abandoning its adaptations in the middle of their runs.

  3. Riru says:

    Hi!

I was just wondering where did you watched all of the Second Series (and if you downloaded it from somewhere).

If you could give me any tips, please mail me.

    Thanks

  4. Faith says:

Madhouse we love Saiunkoku Monogatari series 1 and 2 and passionately desire a 3rd series so please provide us with a third series!!!
I really have a deep affection for all of the characters. Love them all! and especially am waiting holding my breath waiting for the development- let there be definite development between Ryukki and Shureei. I have seen Ryukki lonely for a long time and want to see his onesided omoi answered- FINALLY. Madhouse we’ll be waiting!

  5. Kate says:

please, please, will you email me what happened in the end? i know its spoils everything, but i just cant sleep…

  6. Kaoru_toshihiro says:

Madhouse, please finish the series! we wanna know what happens with ryuuki and shuurei! is he going to marry her or the other girl! Please finish the story! as for all the fans , keep posting things that you want a 3rd series, if there is enough encore they will continue making the series!

  7. Hinata_Kurosaki says:

I also want a 3rd season! Ryuuki and Shuurei should be together, hopefully something awesome is going to happen. People have been saying SM 3rd season will be out this march 2009, but I am sure is true… T^T

  8. cherry rose says:

I have been always waiting for the next season of the saiunkoku monogatari… its really great story and I cant sleep thinking of it……..by the way thank you for the review and its so nice

  9. sharlene says:

    wah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i nee a season 3 quickly because its awful to leave us hangkng =’(

  10. Evelyn says:

Oh c’mmon, why is Shuurei not accepting the love of Ryuuki?!! Gosh, when is season 3 coming out? Please don’t leave us half hanging with the story! Look forward to seeing Ryuuki and Shuurei together.

  11. Jmay says:

i do wish to see Ryuuki and Shuurei together. They seemed to by such perfect couple. I hope that Shuurei would be able to do her job as a government official and marry Ryuuki at the same time. Please continue the story with the third season. I’m awaiting for it. thanks.

  12. xyrhan says:

i love this anime but thinking that it came in a short-hand is such a spoiler..i really want more!! i wonder what will happen to the love story of shuurei and ryuuki.

i want a neat and happy ending..

  13. mae says:

i’m still deciding wether to watch the following episodes..i really love this but i dont want to find myself disappointed unable to find out the ending right away..hehe,i am in hold until the nxt season is finally available.

would there really be a next season?? i am really hoping!! please..? season3..

  14. hana says:

I completely agree a third season is needed! Shuurei, as the main character, still doesn’t know that Seiran is Ryuuki’s brother, or that her dad is the black wolf, or that the civil affairs guy (who raised Kouyuu – with the fan) is her uncle – and also Sa Sakujun, is he alive or not?! Too many unanswered questions…
I want to get hold of the ‘light novels’ as Wiki calls them, but I can’t find them anywhere online – maybe not available in England?

  15. hana says:

p.s. I need to see more ryuuren! I love him! XD

  16. que_chan says:

i already finished watching the second season and also hoping there is the third season. very hoping!! the story line still hanging and i really want to know about seiran past life time b4 he met shouka. so many questions. so onegai!!! season 3!!

  17. Harmonyrose says:

No! I finished watching both seasons in under three days, it can’t be done! I refuse to believe that it won’t continue. It’s so good and it’s only partway finished there are too many loose ends. I wish that the producers would hurry with the next season; I would really love to see what happens.

  18. Nina says:

Jeez…. I just finished the second season and I’m still longing for more…. There’s still so much that needs to be solved… Not only Ryuuki und Shuurei… what about Seiran’s feelings, the mysterious Hyou Clan or Eigetsu und Kourin? Just to name a few. Please, I’m begging for a third season, it just has to be done, please

  19. Peace_ says:

I don’t think the novel has been completed.
The can’t continue the series if the novel’s not completed.

  20. yume says:

    OMG….
I don’t want the story to be ended like this>_

  21. Arif says:

This anime has cost me 2 tissue boxes. The disease episode (28 i think 2nd series) and some more got me weeping. I began to appreciate what life is all about and the importance of company (friends, love companion), trust and the fruits of hard work.

Shuurei’s personality has affected me deeply in real life. I wish I can be like her.

Season 3 is a must. Lets all write to the producers abt it :P

  22. shela says:

yeah! i hope they make season 3! must! i didn’t like the end like that,, i can’t sleep verywell after watch season 2 with ending like that! i think about “who will shuurei choose?” what about seiran? i very like him. and than Ensei, he like shuurei too, right?

  23. Huiling says:

Yeh.. So sad it ended with no ending.. Can’t wait for 3rd season if there it.. In fact, I truely hoped there is.. T_T

  24. kyoko-han says:

I think I’m the only one who doesnt want shuurei and ryuuki to get together 0_0 mainly because I dont think shuurei loves him as much as he does and she would have to give up being an official which is something I dont think she wants to do. Like her father said she is not the type to marry for love.
The set up of the series gives me the indication that she either will end up with someone else or on one at all I would be ok with it ^_^ lol

  25. lily palmer says:

madhouse has written a wonderful amine. yet has been cruel metaphorically speaking they gave us only 2/3 of a book no author in their right mind would dare do such a thing. i don’t know how they can not at least settle accounts. omg it’s worse than a song that just stops in the middle of the crescendo

  26. big fan says:

i had just finished both seasons an loved them i stayed up all night trying to get them all in because i could not stop watching them.i had to work the next day so i was getting maybe 2-3hrs f sleep because i couldn’t stop.i love it so much an yes i wanna see what happens with ryuuki.does she find out about serian being ryukki’s brother too?or even what happen’s to everyone else.please come out with season 3!!!!!!

  27. Lovelyrose says:

I cant Believe that this series ended :(! but im satisfied about the season 2 ending, how Ryuuki finally realize his job as the emperor. but they left us with many cliff hangers and many unanswered events! T-T i watched the first and second season 24/7 i cant stop until i finished the ending! But darn, i want to know what happened to both Ryuuki and Shuurei, like whens the time limit! And there’s many things i want to know more of. they left a big mark about the Hyuo clan. i need to know about the Barahime. Well I really really really wish that there’s a 3rd season! if there isn’t, i will probably be disappointed, just to leave us with a lot of questions.

  28. ivory says:

Wew, so many comments that so similiar with mine..waiting the third season is really suck..! I hope the author won’t let us wait too long… Or maybe should I help the author to finish this story… I would love to.. :))

  29. chidori says:

still no news about the third season?

  30. chidori says:

IMO Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka is a must-watch for fans of moeblob shows. It’s some of the best moeblob I’ve seen in a long time.

@JaK: Thing is, I’ve already read up about the world and characters abilities (no plot) from the wikia. So at this stage, I expect I’ve already taken the “good stuff” from Mahouka and expect nothing good from the adaptation.
Which leaves me open to being pleasantly surprised, should it become entertaining at some point.

you’d have to make it through the really boring enrollment arc for the hype to be justified though raggers :( ( also the arc manga covered hence the bad publicity)

My bad, instead of “must watch” I meant “truly great”.
I’m watching Mahouka partly because the hype demands it, and partly because the universe, and it’s rules, are very, very interesting. The hype reason is why I watched SAO, and the first half of GC (though I couldn’t handle more than that). Need to watch enough of it to have a valid opinion on it after all.

i’ve read the mahouka manga and tbh i didn’t really like it … have yet to try the anime, though! for me so far the only shows i’ll definitely be following are captain earth and sidonia no kishi, most probably no game no life, and maybe hitsugi no chaika … (sorry for randomly inserting myself in here)

@moshokosho: There are 5 “must watches” this season IMO. In no particular order:
    Mushishi S2
    JoJo S2
    Baby Steps
    Isshuukan Friends.
    Ping Pong

Ping Pong – 02

Yes, I know that more people here were involved in making this series beyond Masaaki Yuasa. It’s written by the creator of Tekkon Kinkreet, Taiyo Mashimoto. That guy is awesome. And the combination between those two makes this series even better. Because here’s the thing: anime is significantly different from manga or light novels. Beyond […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders – 02

We can never quite get rid of magic fights at a school, now can we, Jojo. Ah well, I forgive it this time, just due to how hilarious it looks seeing these ridiculously bulky men walk around pretending to be high school students. It’s just so over the top, and yet Jojo sets itself apart […]

Mushishi Season 2 – 02

Oh yes. This is it. This is what storytelling should be about: telling real stories about real people, all with their own problems that need to be overcome. And this show does that time and time again in just one episode. I still can’t believe how authentic this series is. The thing is, when I […]

Mushishi – Tokubetsu-hen

Mushishi holds a really special place in my heart. Back in November 2005, when I started up this blog, Mushishi was one of the first shows I picked up to cover weekly. At first I didn’t think much behind it: it just looked interesting and I wanted to cover it, but as it went on […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Review – 89/100

There are a lot of ways to adapt something. Shounen battle series tend to very quickly fall into a very dull variation of that: really slow pacing that goes on forever with long boring drawn out battles that all look like each other. David Production looked at them, and just said “we can do better!” […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – 26

Oh Jojo. What an ending. I did not expect what would happen here at all. Perhaps the ending was not as impressive as with Psycho Pass or From the New World, but still this is every way in which a shounen series should end. You hear that, other shounen series? Watch this for how endings […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – 23 & 24

And here are the penultimate episodes of Jojo. And seriously, I loved the fights here. One one hand you have Stroheim yelling like crazy, while […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]

Everyone’s taste is different, and that’s a wonderful thing because that allows us to have so many different forms of media that all aim toward their own niche. Noucome! You do not want to know how long I have been waiting for a series like this. More than half a decade, at the very least. Finally a series comes along and puts the incredibly overused harem genre in its place. And it actually does it well. Thank you! So to elaborate: the harem […]

Silver Spoon Review – 86/100

When Noitamina started airing two series per season, it was amazing. I like surprises, like when a series comes that just turns out to be good against my expectations.
