And so Shigofumi has ended. Surprisingly, it didn’t go as I planned. Fumi didn’t turn into a psychotic killer at all, and she instead became surprisingly likable throughout the episode. It’s really sad that this series is so short, as it would have been able to do great things if it was allowed twelve more episodes. Shigofumi really has its own style, and I believe that it wouldn’t run out of inspiration with two seasons. Ah well, in exchange for its short length, it turned into a short but sweet series.

Basically, Mika went back into Fumi for a while and temporarily disappeared, so that Fumi would be able to lead her own life. Fumi, however, had a lot of trouble in her own life, and just wasn’t suited to be transferred to school so quickly. Everyone took pictures of her, she became paranoid, her own mother didn’t want to have her anymore. In the end, when she runs to Mikawa Kirameki’s house, Mika finally appears again, and smacks her for running away every time. While it wasn’t the best ending, it was great to see the “internal” struggle between Fumi and Mika. In the climax, it finally turned out that both of them had their own needs, but were holding back because of the other. Nice. I like it.

But why? For GOD’S SAKE WHY!? Who the heck found it a good idea to suddenly make Natsuko fall in love with Kaname? It comes from nowhere, serves absolutely no purpose, is very badly developed, and turned her entirely character into a joke. I suppose that the writers wanted to add a bit more extra tension, but that rather backfired on them, just like every umpth series that attempts such a freaking twist!

Ah, now that that’s out, I do hope that more series like Shigofumi appear. Series that create their own style, and don’t try to be like others. This really has been a series with its own identity, and even though the plot was a bit boggled up at times, I had a blast watching it.

=> Hah. Short memory is short.

Does the name “Ichirou Okouchi” ring a bell ?

Sweet Jesus do I hate that guy. -__-

  2. Jess says:

Eh? I’m pretty sure she’s had a crush on him ever since their school days and just didn’t let it show because she knew he liked Fumika. It’s quite obvious that she’s in love with him from the first time he calls to ask her about Fumika. But maybe that’s too subtle for guys to notice?:P

  3. Veester says:

I was sure that Natsuko had a crush on Kaname since ever. Like, the first time he calls her, she totally blushes and stammer a lot :D

She seems the type that holds back for her friends though…

  4. kdp says:

Natsuko’s crush was pointed out by Chiaki in the hot springs ep, as well as in the phone call. It seemed pretty well established to me, and I was honestly expecting a confession at some point here.

  5. Skua says:

The writers didn’t explore Natsuka’s character closely, which might be the cause of some confusion. But yeah, as mentioned above, they established her feelings (which compelled her to help Kaname in the first place) from the very beginning.

  6. Chounokoe says:

Well Shigofumi IS based on a light-novel, so it is obvious that, like in previous adaptions of japanese novels, they would not include everything.
I have not yet read the novel myself, but the fact that there are already 4 volumes, makes me believe there is more to the characters than what you learn in the anime.

  7. Neflyte49 says:

Well Chounokoe, read it and then review it n_n

  8. GiGi says:

I think the ending is kind of forced, don’t you agree?

  9. panaghoy88 says:

Man your too dense! There were a number of episodes that showed Natsuko having feelings with Kaname. I’m sorry but I want it out of my system too you know.

  10. Solaris says:

    >Who the heck found it a good idea to suddenly make Natsuko fall in love with Kaname
lol that was obvoius from the very first phone call. And i waasn’t the only one who noticed it, i see …

The ending was weird, i’d bet the 2 Fumikas would reunite as one only being, but that would be a definitive end. Now there’s space for a second serie :) Too many series nowadays try to avoid any kind of definite ending. Normally i hate it, but i’m pretty happy in this case. I long to see some more episodes in the future.

@Mario, you were worried that you would be covering too much slice of life style anime this season, at least with this I will likely be taking one off your hands. I don’t want to cover it but hey if the public says so…guess I will have to suffer.

Also it’s nice to see there was heated arguments on EVA even before I start to do any post review. The way I see it thou certain films/ series are classic/ influential for a reason, if they are brilliant I certainly can still see its sparks. Like I can still amazed of Potemkin Battleship on its montahe editing, or It Happens one night fot its influential on romantic comedy. So I really look forward to see how I feel about EVA hahaa

Jezz, I was almost certain that I would cover Orange, mainly because I never have thought it would be on top of the polls. Anw, it’s good to see how Aidan cover it as it appears I’m a much more easy-marker than Aidan

There is a hipster movement of contrarianism, that they just like to hate on whatever’s popular and deemed kinda mainstream. I get defensive when they shit on classics like Akira, Berserk and Ghost in The Shell. I see that wasn’t the case here. Anybody can sincerely dislike Anything; that’s fine.

I see your point too. We can certainly take the stance of judging a thing by its own merit, unobstructed by social influences and constrains of time. Yet even at that Evangelion is a fairly slick piece of science fiction, and an interesting watch. At worst it’s boring and contrived, but that’s harmless. Never really fair to call it shit.

@Aidan: looking back soberly I did come back a little too heated. That’s uncalled for and I’m sorry for that. I usually don’t lash out of unrelated daily stress, but there are mistakes here and there.

Look I knew how this would end before it began. We have done this already and neither of us are changing our stance. K-Off laid out things perfectly with his response so I see no reason to elaborate. Only reason I jumped in was because you brought Fate into it and if that was the bait then congrats, you won. I see no reason to continue the farce with no compromise in sight.
In other words, need sleep. Goodnight.

@Bam,”I never said the problems it has gets erased by its early release or cultural significance”
Neither did I. I said you are hand waving it’s problems by stating so, which you are.

…And orange is still top of the poll…ugh. Seems like this is going to be torture for me. Kiznaiver was already trying my patience with those speeches but if Orange is even worse…oh boy…

Bungou Stray Dogs – 12 (end)

And we get to the end of Bungou Stray Dogs, but this last episode doesn’t offer any conclusive ending, instead feel more like a set up episode for the next season. This last episode functions like a typically Bungou Stray Dogs’ episode; there are many good things to say about it, mainly the technical triumphs […]

Joker Game Review – 50/100

When experiencing the wave of new anime each season it can get rather tiresome to notice all the teenagers fighting supernatural forces while gathering a harem through seer luck or similarly tired concepts. So when something like Joker game comes along and takes a road less traveled with it’s story, naturally I am well on […]

Mayoiga Review – 78/100

Mayoiga has to be one of the most misunderstood shows in recent years. On a surface, the premise alone has a lot of potential. Joker Game – 12

Upon finishing yet another rather uneventful episode of Joker Game, I began to wonder just what this series had planned for its finale. “How best to top off a rather mediocre series such as this?” I thought to myself. However when looking over general consensus over the episode I found out that I seen the […]

Mayoiga – 12 (end)

Mayoiga pretty much wraps up its story this week and for the series that focus much about anti-climaxes and inconsistency, this ending neatly conclude all of its main loose end. In the final twist of Mayoiga, it turns out that Koharun is God’s daughter (now I understand the inclusion of him in Mayoiga) and all […]

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir Game Review – 87/100

Oh my. This game was just utterly, utterly incredible when it came out, so despite disliking the usual remasters (ahem, Valkyria Chronicles), I was pretty stoked when I learned I’d be able to play this again on better hardware. Chinese Animation Guide – Part 2: Chinese Anime shows

As much as I hated the term Chinese Anime (Anime stands for Japanese animation, strictly speaking), this is the exact term for those shows.
