Now this was an awesome episode! I’m glad to see that the creators were able to play with the manga chapters in such a way to save the best story for last. In fact, I wouldn’t mind if the Himawari-arc would close off the xxxHolic anime, because in this way, the series would leave you in the best way possible, instead of how the first season ended with a random side-story. It’s just like Mushishi: that one stayed episodic until the end, but it did save one of its best stories for last, with great effects.

I really expected this final arc to be even darker than the spider-arc, and what I got was an incredibly heart-warming episode. The bond between Watanuki, Himawari and Doumeki is really something special, and its wonderful to see everything the past thirty-five episodes have been building up for come together.

At this point, I really can say for sure that without taking the manga into account, xxxHolic has been Clamp’s best work for me. Clamp is far from perfect, Tsubasa Chronicle seems to be getting more ridiculous with every plot-twist, Chobits had a lot of boring moments and the character designs of Code Geass are more aimed to attract fangirls and fanboys than some creative masterpieces, but in a series like this one and Cardcaptor Sakura, you can see that they’ve shown their best sides.

    Have you seen/read X ?
X is to CLAMP what Hi no Tori is to Osamu Tezuka.
And RG Veda is very good too.

And I just don’t consider Code Geass as CLAMP material. Despite what some fanboys may be thinking.

  2. Hayama says:

yeah i think both tokyo babylon and x are clamp best works.

  3. Lika says:

Tokyo Babylon and Holic are my favourite, as well as Clover. Code Geass is just… NO. NEVER. *shudders and scrubs her brain*

Time to be a bit of a heretic, again. My only experience with an actual CLAMP work, though even that was tangential at best, was with the X movie so many years ago. Not exactly a good one, I’d admit.

Haven’t really had the chance to look into their other stuff, all of their manga included.

That said, xxxHolic looks like a fairly good place to start, the first season of which I’ll probably get to watch much later this year, more or less, so any spoilers I may have casually picked up will likely be forgotten by then.

A pity I can’t really comment on the currently airing episodes though.

Yeah, Tsubasa would be perfect if CLAMP didn’t keep throwing the “HA WE GOTCHA” plot at their readers every other chapter. That’s why it’s a shame that xxxHolic is shorter than Tsubasa. Hopefully CLAMP will keep their word and go back to Gohou/Legal Drug after Tsubasa and xxxHolic are done.

  6. Lika says:

X the movie is probably the worst way to get into CLAMP as people who watch it either die from the horrible or the LULZ. The X TV series, while still far from perfect and no where near the level of the manga, is much better and will definitely give more insight into some of the characters of Tsubasa (though the Seishirou/Subaru parts won’t make much sense until you read Tokyo Babylon as X is kind of a semi-sequel to it). The best intro for CLAMP, I think, is still Cardcaptor Sakura as it’s entertaining, cute, funny, touching, and far less disturbing and gory than their other stuff.

I liked X tv a lot, enjoyed it even more than holic and tsubasa, well even though all of Clamp’s works are at good level!

@Kaiser: then Harmony is just like Empire of Corpses, a waste of good animation. Oh well, I’ll watch it once and forget about it then. Is there a torrent out for it already?

K-off: well usually these settings are backdrop for some form of character development, you can talk about that. There are some slice of life shows in which nothing happens, those are probably not worth reviewing tho. That’s why I’m still in favor of some shows getting a few episode reviewed at once.

@K-Off, thats odd. I got Tokyo Mirage for 40 euro. Were as I spent 60 on Fates. This time I bought it off amazon after finding out it was cheaper there.

Damn Tokyo Mirage is expensive. Costs more than a Fire Emblem game and Persona 4 combined so this better be worth it.

Always difficult to talk about slice of lifes. Usually its always “This week our characters went to the park. The end.”

@Bam: There was this bizzaro Joan of arc slide show arthouse erotica anime from the 70s that recently got a re-release, its somewhat tied to Tezuka, really trippy shit, Kanashimi no belladonna.

As a book I could see it flowing better. Oshii or Kamiyama could more effectively adapt such density of material to screen.

Ultimately I think it got too ambitious and had too much on its plate.

I have yet to see genocidal organ, although yes Harmony was pretty below average and that was putting it mildly. I will consider re-evaluating it if it gets dubbed/when the dub comes out.
Admittedly its a film of big ideas, my problem with it that the movie itself is just so plodding and I found it too overstuffed to properly focus on/fully develop its themes and the exposition was particularly heavy handed.

Kiznaiver Review – 60/100

Kiznaiver is a very different faire from Studio Triggers other works in that it takes a more serious tone and has a writer who tends to go more for the melodramatic. This is a tale about a group of very different people gathered together and have their pain linked to one another. In an effort […]

Kiznaiver -12

This was certainly pure narrative confusion at it’s zenith and in that regard I don’t mean that the events depicted were hard to understand but rather a general confusion on what mood it wants to go out on. In this episode we had comedic, drama and climatic showdown all hastily weaved together to try and […]

Bungou Stray Dogs – 12 (end)

And we get to the end of Bungou Stray Dogs, but this last episode doesn’t offer any conclusive ending, instead feel more like a set up episode for the next season. This last episode functions like a typically Bungou Stray Dogs’ episode; there are many good things to say about it, mainly the technical triumphs […]

Joker Game Review – 50/100

When experiencing the wave of new anime each season it can get rather tiresome to notice all the teenagers fighting supernatural forces while gathering a harem through seer luck or similarly tired concepts. So when something like Joker game comes along and takes a road less traveled with it’s story, naturally I am well on […]

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress – 10

Mayoiga Review – 78/100

Mayoiga has to be one of the most misunderstood shows in recent years. On a surface, the premise alone has a lot of potential. Joker Game – 12

Upon finishing yet another rather uneventful episode of Joker Game, I began to wonder just what this series had planned for its finale. “How best to top off a rather mediocre series such as this?” I thought to myself. However when looking over general consensus over the episode I found out that I seen the […]

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 12

Mayoiga – 12 (end)

Mayoiga pretty much wraps up its story this week and for the series that focus much about anti-climaxes and inconsistency, this ending neatly conclude all of its main loose end. In the final twist of Mayoiga, it turns out that Koharun is God’s daughter (now I understand the inclusion of him in Mayoiga) and all […]

I really should be getting Grand Kingdom or waiting for Mirage Sessions.
