Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai, or Munto TV, was the biggest disappointment of the past Winter Season. Here the creators had a great chance to take a flawed OVA, and spread it across the airtime of a TV-series so that the setting and the characters could finally get the chance to be developed properly. So, what do they do? A bloody recap. Only the final three and a half episodes featured new material, which was way too little for a story of this caliber. Still, with a movie scheduled, it still could redeem itself. But yeah, I guess that you can all see by the rating for this review that it obviously didn’t.

Oh, the announcement for the movie sounded so promising. Even though it would also recap the new footage for the TV-series, it did promise that it was going to be just a “director’s cut of various climactic scenes”, with “new footage” and it “ends with a finale”. Looking back, that was the biggest piece of crap that the creators could ever have come up with to promote this movie.

Let’s start with the “new footage”. Let me tell you exactly how much new footage there was in this movie: three minutes. No, seriously, it has some three minutes of strange back-story slapped on the beginning. Apart from that, everything else simply recaps the TV-series.

So, how about the “director’s cut of various climactic scenes”? Well, apparently the creators found every single scene a climactic one, because the rest of the movie is literally every single scene of the new footage of the TV-series. Even the useless comic relief ones. The only part that is missing is the final part of the last episode. You know, the scene that PROMISED THAT THE STORY WASN’T OVER YET.

And how about “ends with a finale”? Well, this movie sure as heck ends with a finale. The same that the TV-series ended with. Yeah, the same finale with its Deus ex Machina climax, the same finale in which the characters started to act completely out of character, and the same finale in which Munto dressed up the three teenaged leads into sailor uniforms with extremely short skirts. What the heck was the point in advertising that!?

It’s a shame. This series really had potential; if only the creators actually made a remake of this series, panned over 26 episodes or something similar, it would have been really good. This, however, is just crap. Even for a recap-movie, it’s incredibly cheap, the way it was advertised, the way it promised so many things, and instead just chose the laziest way out and even failed in terms of storytelling with that ending. If you want to see what Munto is about, check out the TV-series, skip the rest.

Storytelling: 1/10
Characters: 1/10
Production-Values: 5/10
Setting: 5/10

  1. What a pain =_= Thanks for the warning. It sucks if there aren’t any new scenes. The ending really made me think there could be more to this. Guuuuhhh . . . . what a disappointment

  2. senerikfred says:

You gave a 9/10 for production values when all they did was reuse footage and slap three minutes of new stuff in? That’s a bit unlike you.

  3. psgels psgels says:

fred: I gave it that score because the graphics were just the same as in the TV-series (as in, really good), but you have a good point. *fixed*

  4. AlexS says:

I guess this is what you would call milking a franchise to the bone.

I had dropped this series after the first episodes, and planned to wait for the movie to come to check if it was worth continuing, but looks like I spared myself some grief.

It’s interesting how things like this happen in the anime world. I think in movies the crew would be crucified by the audience ^_^

  5. senerikfred says:

AlexS: Wouldn’t that be because anime is much more into making franchises of everything? Like with Gundam, or Pokemon. Live-action rarely has interesting enough character designs that even figurines would sell. Re-used footage gets by more easily to begin with, such as with magical girl transformation segments which are usually amusing to see again and become absolutely classic, or with footage for normal scenes just having different audio placed over it, techniques that would make me groan in anything live-action.

  6. Dr. Pest says:

Thank’s for the info (aka warning)! =D
So I won’t spend my time for this – since I have some other, unseen, series like Kurau I want to watch.

  7. Howling-kun says:

    lol KyoAni
Adapt the newest Key VNs already!

  8. Reltair says:

I was actually thinking about watching this anime once. Guess I can save time now by only watching the TV series.

  9. mangaka-chan says:

I had a lot of hopes for the TV series when it was announced, since I enjoyed the OVAs wanted to see the story flesh out. But no, instead KyoAni decides to troll us and gave us a bunch of empty promises. I think this is THE biggest disappointment I’ve ever had in anime.

  10. k says:

First Haruhi, now this. Kyoani now produces nothing but disappointments and trolls. The End.

  11. Jess says:

I have a disagree with you on all this munto is one of my favorite animes of all time and it truly is a underated anime just shoved under the carpet like its nothing. I believe it has a beautiful story and yes I wish it was a longer series I will agree with you on that but this is only my opinion.

Since I’m the designated Berserk guy now, I feel as if it’s my responsibility to announce that Berserk chapter 345 is now available.

@Bam: Aidan did recommend me the size he usually goes for (246:135). I could never get the exact same size so I ended up using 240:138. It’s weird since we used the same source I think. For EVA because they used different format, I changed the size to 200:151

@Aidan @Mario I noticed you guys use different dimensions for your screenshots. I set mine to 242*136 which is the same aspect ratio as a 1080p image (16:9). How did y’all end up with those sizes?

Nice! Looking forward to the reviews. Some nice fighting scenes besides the build up of the story. I just hope they don’t play just this one tune all the time ;)

@Aidan: for sure. Might as well put this one up before the next episode is out, and I’ll brush up on my WordPress and handle the next one on. Thx.

Berserk(2016) – 04 [Epiphany]

I wanted to start off by apologizing for the late review, as well as giving some general information and my overall impression of the new series. I’ve been a Berserk fan for quite a while, and both the 97’ series and the Berserk manga are among my top 5 anime/manga of all time. I was […]

Neon Genesis Evangelion – 02

Turns out that our boy Shinji is after all THE ONE, akin to Neo in the Matrix or every main mecha hero for that matter. He has been chosen, he must therefore use such strength and heart and wits as he has. Sound like I’m complaining, right? Well, I’m not because I think this is […]

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei – 04

Well after a decisive defeat after assaulting the enemy headquarters, Illya and her newly united crew decide to hang around the school. The main bulk of the episode was dedicated to a fight between Chloe and Illya while other parts were mainly the characters clarifying the situation. The main reason behind the fight was Chloe […]

Mob Psycho 100 – 02/03

This may be a surprise to some so I better start this with an explanation. As you know I originally planned to cover Berserk this season and have put up reviews of the last two episodes. However due to Berserks rather disappointing quality, my desire to cover it has vanished. I doubt anyone wants to […]

orange 04c

orange – 04

Orange takes it very slowly this week, even slower than its standard. Indeed, we can summarize the plot of the first 15 minutes just by one sentence: After Kakeru dating with another girl, Naho feels brokenhearted and avoids Kakeru like a plague. Which actually makes sense. After all, the guy already had a girlfriend so […]

Thunderbolt Fantasy – 03

With this episode we basically get an idea where the show will head for the rest of the series and I pretty much enjoy the direction they taking so far. Of course it makes sense that in order to get past those obstacles, the band needs to ally with others who are most suitable for […]

Fate Kaleid Liner PRISMA ILLYA 3rei!! - 03 2

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei – 03

Plenty of action this week as we have faceoffs between Beatrice and Illya with Gil and Angelica firing legendary weapons back and forth. I wish there was a bit more fight animation here as while it was the same in the manga, it’s still a shame to have the scene cut away just when the […]

While I did enjoy this episode and think that some interesting things have been brought up, I must admit that even my patience is starting to run out. I blame this mostly on the fact that I am watching this weekly instead of binge watching it all as the progression in these episodes has slowed […]

Legend of Legacy Review – 80/100

Oh Square Enix, this is the kind of avant-garde work you need to do. Developed by Furyu with the people behind SaGa, and written by Masato Kato of Chrono Trigger, I knew I was in for a unique game right from the start. But its gameplay is certainly divisive and for good reason, as this […]

My Life as a Courgette (2016) Movie Review – 82/100

It’s never easy to make a good family’s animation. For movies aim at adults, the filmmakers can easily get themselves loose, go crazy and the audience can still get it. But for kids, these movies might be one of the first movies they’ve ever seen and that’s a huge responsibility. They have to aware of […]

Flying witch Review – 86/100

As I mentioned in one of my weekly posts, most of the reason why a slice-of-life anime show don’t work well is not because there’s nothing happen, but more because the cast isn’t interesting enough or the show tends to repeat the things that we already know. I’m happy to say that this is not […]

Kiznaiver Review – 60/100

Joker Game Review – 50/100

Mayoiga Review – 78/100

Mayoiga has to be one of the most misunderstood shows in recent years. On a surface, the premise alone has a lot of potential. The idea behind putting 30 people, each of them has very different set of personalities, together in a bus to a mysterious lost village, in order to start over new life […]
