I still believe that these are some really strange zombies. I mean, usually from zombies you’d expect the mindset of “humans tasty. rawr”. The zombies here however… they only respond to certain sounds, and even then they just have this tendency to not move for any period of time. I guess that this is a bit of a problem that came from adapting this thing from manga to anime: I imagine that it may have been plausible in the manga, but in anime form it’s getting a bit ludicrous.

The climax of this episode was a bit weird in more ways than just that. I mean, beyond the zombies: the characters could easily have jumped over the fence and run away. Sure, they would have lost the car, but at least they would still be alive. What kept them from doing that? Sheer fear? And yet… the soundtrack in this episode and especially in the final quarter of this episode was the best of this series so far. What this episode lacked in sense it actually made up with its tension.

This episode also put a lot of attention on the guns this time, especially with the way in which Hirono had to explain the workings and details of all of them. The fanservice… was just crazy. Ah well, at least it was creative. My main problem with fanservice is that it often is cheap, completely pointless and annoying, but that was nowhere near the case here.

I think it would be hard for that girl with the injured leg to jump the fence.

  2. Myssa Rei says:

What? No comment on the jello-like boob physics? XD

  3. It definitely suffers from the transition from manga. Surrounding the cast with zombies is great for tension in a still image but silly when we see the gigantic horde has only moved a few feet in an hour in the anime…

That said, I feel HSotD is stronger in anime form. Run and gun action just doesn’t work as well in static images…

  4. Skoopman says:

Why didn’t you give this episode a “great” rating if you were somehow satisfied?^^ Best episode so far after 1 and 2.

  5. Suzuku says:

They couldn’t hop over the fence because Rei was unable to move and it would have taken too long to help her over the fence. The team has a very tight knit “one go, we all go” mentality.

  6. jcb says:

It’s like the breasts are characters in the show!

  7. GPrieto says:

When you see any episode of HSotD, is so obvious that the mangaka does hentai work that I wonder: really needs anime more and more PORN? It’s so annoying.

  8. Scorcher says:

Boobs + Matrix Bullet Time Effect FTW!!!

  9. kyuzo says:

this episode was soooo hard to watch. lol. how long would it have taken them to just bring rei back into the humvee? and why the hell would you ride on top of the vehicle in the first place?! ugh!!! only reason im watching it is i want to see how it all ends.

  10. Alael says:

Why didn’t the simply go THROUGH the wires?! There was enough space there to fit even the fat guy. Only the zombies would be caught on it.

  11. Reltair says:

I was wondering the exact same thing. They could have easily slipped through the fence even with the injured person. Fear? Naw, I guess it’s hard to make anime/manga that is fully realistic (or they just don’t bother).

  12. Josh S says:

    “The fanservice… was just crazy.”

    Well said, psgels, well said.

  13. Tc says:

LMAO, I so want to go find a lady with double D’s and ask her to allow me to fire a rifle off her chest so I can record the boob action and decide if it is sexy or not… cause that animation was like… really really really not… >.> looked more like… ya know what? I just don’t know… kinda like jello bouncing on the moon I suppose?

BTW how in hell can you not hit a horde of zombies from 15feet away with a SCOPED rifle?

  14. Michael says:

@Tc Well if you didn’t know how to use it, as you can see by his shotgun aim, you can miss really easily. This is still one of the best series of the season, despite the fanservice and despite a few bad plot choices.

And as psgels said, it’s great at building tension.

  15. HaloSyn says:

All i know is its just the main character and and the wooden sword wielding hotty next episode YES!!!!!!!!!…..she better not die damnit

  16. UnknownVoice says:

Everything was awesome till I noticed that they are ALREADY starting to diverge from manga.

God help us, Madhouse will pull a claymore yet again, with some sort of crappy anime-original ending.

At least next episode is the Saeko reveal, which, by all means, MUST BE manga faithful. if not, I will rage.

  17. pat says:

Actually, zombies that react to only some sounds and otherwise remain immobile are more natural since they have to conserve energy just like any other organism. True that the way they react to some sounds in this anime is strange to say the leats but always moving zombies will get exhausted quite quickly.

  18. Creative fanservice? XD

  19. gavin says:

I finally realized what’s been bugging me with this series: There’s no specific antagonist or direct goal for the characters. (other than pure survival)

Even though I found him annoying, the villain teacher/cult leader at least gave the main cast something to respond to, and something to build a story around. As is, they are just running around and, maybe, looking to find what’s happened to their parents… which leaves the story teen angst, fan service and action sequences to work with. Not very interesting :/

  20. czz says:

They should have left rei to get eaten :/.
    Anyway
ot did any see the trailer for that new zombie series that’s airing this fall i think it looks good.

  21. Earl says:

thats definitely some creative fan service! but the story is pretty good too imo and i guess i enjoyed the fanservice too.. the bullet between the boobs and upskirt was really creative lol!!

K-off could edit category though. Maybe I could use his account and that would allow me to edit them. Hell all he would need to do is change is password to something unimportant and let me know what it is. This I could pop in using his account and edit them…though I tried doing this with lightning bolts account and I can’t do it there either.

@reaLjustified, would have done so a while ago if I could. When psgels added me to the site I think he forgot to give me permissions to the category section. So I cannot create or edit categories at all. So it means I can’t edit that list down there.

@AidanAk47 Great, I was wondering if you could update your currently watching list? It’s pretty hard to find what shows your currently watching without scrolling down the whole page :(

Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There! – 04

Not much to talk about this episode as it was mainly set up to the next. The army’s reputation looks to have risen after driving off a dragon and looks to have caught the attention of our new female character. I was about to sigh when I saw the old anime staple of a bath […]

Gakkou Gurashi! – 03

Here it is, a flashback to the beginning of the outbreak. In a market as over saturated with zombie media as ours it’s rather hard to do this kind of story without treading on old ground. The start of the outbreak is the focal point of every beginning for a zombie movie. Rarely is it […]

Gangsta. – 04

I have said it before but these twilight characters rub me the wrong way. This group of superhuman individuals just sticks out like a sore thumb in a grounded setting such as this. They are a Shounen element in a otherwise Seinien show so when they come out and start leaping on rooftops this just […]

Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There! – 03

This episode introduces what looks to be the main trio of girls for the cast. A elf girl, a mage girl and a Goth lolita girl with a giant axe. The Goth lolita, otherwise know as the Apostle of a death god, Rory is so far the most interesting of the bunch. Though mainly because […]

Gangsta. – 03

I really don’t understand Mangalobe’s thinking on this changes, for you see this episode was an adaption of the second chapter in the manga. I don’t see the reason why they felt that they needed to mix around the order of these episodes but I suppose it’s no harm done. To be honest I found […]

Gakkou Gurashi! – 02

So despite saying I would cover Chaos Dragon in my summer preview, I have decided to cover this instead. The reasons for this is simple, the obvious one being that Chaos Dragon is a poorly written, badly animated and jarring mess of an anime. But the main reason is that after the second episode […]

Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There! – 02

This episode was certainly stronger than the first as Itami’s otaku tendencies were cut down and the focus was more on the conflict. The fight itself was brilliantly portrayed as we saw it mainly from the side of the other world. In the beginning when they were marching towards the army they were assured of […]

Gangsta. – 02

As this show continues the Black Lagoon vibes only get stronger but this episode did present an issue. Namely the supernaturally strong dog tag soldiers which can jump ten feet into the air and pull out road signs. In a series that at least started fairly set in reality these elements are somewhat odd though […]

Knights of Sidonia S2: Battle for Planet Nine review – 73/100

The second season of Sidonia makes a number of mistakes that a lot of second seasons do. That namely being that the anime slows down and introduces characters and conflicts that are often resolved in a undetermined to exist, third season. A new antagonist is introduced, whom does very little in the season and only […]

Little Witch Academia The Enchanted Parade – 81/100

I wonder when it was that a film being childish became a flaw. As a medium grows it takes steps to aim to mature itself and seek a more intellectual level of presenting entertainment. Animation did it as Anime aimed to explore terrontry that cartoons refuse to explore and video games only recently broke away […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks Review – 85/100

For a long time now this adaption has been the dreams of many a Fate fan with many believing it would never come to pass, but now that it is here is it everything that we dreamed? Short answer to this is no, long answer is nearly. I feel this show will have many divided […]

Shirobako Review – 80/100

When you see a harem anime and sigh as the breasts of the female lead jiggle with every step and wind that can flip a skirt it’s easy to forget that somewhere in Japan a group of people worked hard to get that jiggle right and draw each frame of animation. The hardships of the […]

Nerawareta Gakuen Review – 84/100

Let me talk a bit about Ryousuke Nakamura. For a long time, this guy was my hero. He started off as an assistant director to Monster, in my opinion a big reason why that series got such a ridiculously solid adaptation, and then in 2008 he came with the groundbreaking Mouryou no Hako. No TV-series […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]

Kyousogiga Review – 90/100

Everyone’s taste is different, and that’s a wonderful thing because that allows us to have so many different forms of media that all aim toward their own niche. Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Lovecome o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru Review – 80/100

Noucome! You do not want to know how long I have been waiting for a series like this. More than half a decade, at the very least. Finally a series comes along and puts the incredibly overused harem genre in its place. And it actually does it well. Thank you! So to elaborate: the harem […]

Pokemon: The Origin Review – 75/100

Normally I try to avoid spoilers with these reviews, but screw it, it’s Pokemon. Pokemon The Origin is a bomb of nostalgia. Tamayura – More Aggressive Review – 75/100

I’m not going to dedicate a post for my impression for the final three episodes of this series. It was just too boring to write much about. I guess that that gives a pretty accurate indication of what I think about this series. Right at the start of Tamayura’s second season, I asked one question: […]
