After the end of the previous episode, I already had a suspicion that this episode would focus on Ouji’s plans to create the earth rangers. That indeed turned out to be true, but I didn’t expect him to kidnap a group of innocent children to do it. Seriously, this episode was just nothing but a grown man grabbing a bunch of random kids and playing a ridiculously unfair game with them. And it was hilarious.

It’s perhaps not as good as the previous episodes, but even then I absolutely loved this episode. It again takes a group of random guys, this time in middle school, and this time it’s non fiction. Again, their designs were nicely unconventional for anime, and really feel like Ouji picked the nearest five kids that he could find. The way in which they tried to deal with the fact that they had been turned into power rangers (without any actual powers besides a bunch of illegal ones) in a great little parody of the super sentai genre.

This episode subverted a ton of these tropes, like how most kids who get these powers really aren’t going to play along, and how for some the powers may just rise to their heaDS. Or the way in which they couldn’t use most of their weapons because they were grossly illegal.

I also liked that twist with the teacher, and how she as an alien immediately noticed that something was up, and also how she laughed when she found out that Ouji was behind everything. I’m not sure whether this was a one shot episode or whether it’s going to continue next week. That would be interesting, if only to see a bunch of kids beat up Kraft.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

    From the preview this will continue next week… It wasn’t as interesting as the previous episodes but it still was fresh and funny xD

  2. Blade says:

    Awww. Worst score yet. Anime dropped.
    j/k

  3. K.K. says:

    This show is just so much better than everything else airing now, it’s ridiculous. I couldn’t stop laughing the whole time I was watching.

    The rangers have multiple episodes, which is good. “Battle Pocari” just makes me laugh.

  4. Tomtom says:

    Although this episode was hilarious (again), part of me hopes the show will not ONLY be about the prince’s pranks for the rest of its run.

  5. dthiswhtuseek says:

    unfortunately for you that is how the entire series will run, although the way he plays his pranks will be pretty diverse so it will still be hilarious. Well, there are two points that don’t really have pranks the prince pulled but whatever, just watch the show it’s great.

  6. maskedguy says:

    @Blade: Lolwhut, you must have reaaaaaaaaaally high standards ._.;

    @Tomtom: What? You hope this will became serious action series? Well, if it makes you feel better, there are four stories which aren’t about Prince’s pranks =P(I think one of them doesn’t even have appearance by him…)

  7. maskedguy says:

    @Blade: Oops. Sorry, missed the joke AND the “j/k” ^^;

  8. Tomtom says:

    @masked guy. That’s not what I meant (or said). I just hope that the jokes will be woven into some overall plot/ continuous story line, instead a string of random stuff.

  9. Tan-Tan says:

    THE BLUE RANGER IS GON

  10. AKI says:

    @Tan-Tan

    That’s what I thought too. What the hell is Gon doing in this anime series, lol’d.

  11. tanukichan says:

    Haha, is it just me or is there a little reference to Doraemon by Lil Prince when he took out the nuclear missile?

    I’m loving this show. They’re going a darn good job translating the manga jokes to anime form: first the video diary, now the 3D Prince, and so on.

  12. maskedguy says:

    @Tan-Tan & AKI: Well, Level E manga was drawn by the same guy who does Hunter X Hunter.(and did that series where guy shoot spirit bullet things from finger… Forgot the name even though its rather famous XD)

  13. passingby says:

  14. AKI says:

    I know it’s Yoshihiro Togashi!

  15. Ncrdrg says:

    Still such a grade A troll. Great episode as usual.

    There’s no narrative thrusts throughout the show, it’s just scenes happening to get from one action set piece to the next all the while shoving blatant symbolism in your face. The little plot there is feels incredibly weak, aside from the world building there’s no clear objective besides a vague idea of defeating angels and something about Gendo that’s almost background noise with how little it affects the story.

    Having started watching anime only in the mid 2000s despite occasionally seeing them on TV during the 90s, I come from a school of thought that emphasizes coherence more than anything else, basically I want the story to have focus. And while Eva’s influence on character archetypes and animation cannot be argued, I still think the story in Eva is pretty bad.

    Judging purely visually I agree some leeway must be given due to the technical limitations of the time but all of my issues with the series is not visual related but story.
    I have admitted that I don’t hate Eva and I do like aspects of it. But do you really need me to give it praise? There is plenty giving it praise. I see no reason to join the choir.

    Now you are just flying off the hook.
    I understand Eva’s cultural significance, and it’s effect on the medium. I just deem it irrelevant when judging the anime itself. For you see dear boy, if you are going to place EVA above modern anime then you must judge it by modern standards. If it falls short you can’t just bring up historic significance to wave away it’s problems.

    I praised Fate/Zero for its story, pacing and charismatic protagonist. UBW I agreed to its superb battle animation and overall quality of first cour. Now when someone watches EoE or Eva Rebuild 2.2 and comments on nothing of quality, then who is the biased one here really?

    If anything at least call Shinji a shitty annoying character- cuz even I won’t deny that.

    When I mean discussion I don’t mean a series of personal likes and dislikes- but judging objective elements: plot consistency, animation quality, restrain in fan-service and pandering, over reliance on tropes and cliches, etc. Otherwise we all have our different preferences.

    I agree with the cons of Eva, as well as its strengths. Same with Fate. Being pessimistic is a stance, not inherently a flaw. The setting of Eva predicates that tone. If anything I have a bias towards Berserk, and that’s mostly all out of nostalgia.

    Also what ladies? Even the “gentlemen” part is stretching it. It’s very easy for someone who didn’t follow anime 20 years ago to criticize one of its most historic moments. At least this Tenka Seiha fella doesn’t talk smack about what he doesn’t really understand.

    Being bias is not admitting to reasonable faults, not agreeing to them. Trying to exclude the historic significance of a show is not a calm rebuttal, but a desperate attempt to undermine. What is bias is defending Shirou’s childish idealism. Even Nasu realizes how ridiculous that sounds, and makes a point to counter it with one of his own characters. Although by the end he gives in and then pulls a Deus Ex Machina by reviving Archer one last time to tie up loose ends.

Bungou Stray Dogs – 12 (end)

And we get to the end of Bungou Stray Dogs, but this last episode doesn’t offer any conclusive ending, instead feel more like a set up episode for the next season. This last episode functions like a typically Bungou Stray Dogs’ episode; there are many good things to say about it, mainly the technical triumphs […]

Joker Game Review – 50/100

Mayoiga Review – 78/100

Mayoiga has to be one of the most misunderstood shows in recent years. On a surface, the premise alone has a lot of potential. Joker Game – 12

Upon finishing yet another rather uneventful episode of Joker Game, I began to wonder just what this series had planned for its finale. “How best to top off a rather mediocre series such as this?” I thought to myself. However when looking over general consensus over the episode I found out that I seen the […]

Mayoiga – 12 (end)

Mayoiga pretty much wraps up its story this week and for the series that focus much about anti-climaxes and inconsistency, this ending neatly conclude all of its main loose end.
