I do want to stress that the anime original material isn’t entirely hopeless. There’s one thing that it consistently did well: the characters. Even the beach episode: sure, it made no sense, but it was fun.

The majority of this episode was like that episode, really: it was rather far-fetched, but it did delve into the past of Rin and Yukio’s parents. It’s a bit strange to establish their mother as this mentally deranged woman who can’t seem to feel anything about the deaths of countless of people, yet who continues to fight for demon acceptance, although it was an interesting backstory that tied the past together with the present, albeit a bit forcefully. Satan having actual love was a bit awkward, but heck: we have seen so little of him that as a character it’s a twist that could make sense as long as you don’t confuse him with the traditional images of Satan.

The big question mark still is Yukio. The thing is that his character just derailed. Him being the bad guy is the twist that I just can’t accept. It had it coming for episodes now, but I still don’t like it one bit.

    The twist with Satan was a bit humorous. Don’t like the portrayal with the mother though. Like she’s some saint lol.

  2. Tan-Tan says:

    Oh yeah. You forgot to mention Takara XD he finally talked!

  3. ruuruu says:

    @Tan-Tan
    Dude could have made up some stuffs to confuse Yukio, ya know. The way I see it, Yuri was most likely a very naive, lovestruck girl.

    Yeah! His voice is pretty good~

  4. Syio says:

    Do not like the portrayal of Yuri; perfect characters are never interesting. Furthermore, I don’t get how Satan is right in any way. The birth of her children caused Yuri to die–not her father (though one could blame Satan for getting her into that state anyway).

    I also do not understand how Yukio is becoming evil. He did not kill his grandfather, and it’s not exactly his fault Satan’s taken over his body.

    Satan’s also got lots to learn about free will.

  5. ruuruu says:

    @Syio
    Her naivety and childishness are quite the flaws, IMHO… Er, he was telling the flashback from his perspective, so he could be.. editing some parts. They didn’t call Satan the Master of Lies for nothing.

    It doesn’t require evil to be possessed by Satan; just one moment of weakness is enough for him to take over, which should be true for Shirou and probably Yukio’s case. Furthermore, Yukio’s still his son, therefore he should be a somewhat more durable host for him. Of course Satan wouldn’t let such a golden opportunity to pass (=w=;)

  6. Taz says:

    strange, i had almost completely opposite reaction upon first seeing yuri as this sullen and rather plain looking girl. consorting with satan could prolly be put down to a young girl’s naivette. the part of her playing among the flowers etc was over the top though. likewise her whitewashing everything demons did (burning people in blue flames??) as them being curious and playful.

  7. Awatan says:

    Come on, the story was told by Satan in which he portrayed itself as a knightly white wolf and the exorcists were the bad guys, and you guys buy it ?

  8. ruuruu says:

    @Awatan
    Judging from various forum posts all over the internet: Yes, too many people bought satan’s big fat lie.

  9. Ann says:

    I still see Yukio as a good guy. He’s a kid who wanted an extended family but the only people who might count have been plotting against him since he was born. His condition increased rapidly because Egin had already figured out how to manipulate him, step by step, and Satan (of course) is even better at manipulation.

    This episode was better than I imagined. I’m glad that some of my guesses from last week were wrong.

    @When halloween rolls round I’m going to have to binge watch some of these crazy films, one of the reasons halloween is my favourite holidays is because it feels like a special night to watch horror movies.

    I had it on video tape, but then I threw it away some years ago. I really should stop throwing my obscure films away, because I like coming back to watch them every now and then.

    I’d like to bring up this one to see if it still exists. It’s been a while since I watched it, but it’s about a girl with multiple limbs who drains the soul of men. The most memorable scene involved a seven way. It was a latino b-film from the 90′s.

    There are definitely sex toys all over Japan involving all your favorite anime characters, so it’s not a stretch to imagine that some people can only be gratified by certain characters. Right on.

    Your cosplay comment interests me. In all seriousness, there could very well be a case where the person only sleeps with the cosplayer only because they are attracted to the character.

    Del Toro does have a fetish for insects and monsters, apparently

Mushishi – 07

Now this was such a beautiful episode. We often see Mushi portrayed as parasites. In fact, they are pretty much based on the insects and viruses of their world. There probably are enough real viruses and insects living in the Mushishi world, but they just aren’t the focus of the series. Anyway, what they did […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders – 06 & 07

This is where this arc gets weird. We’re still in adventure modus, however in these two episodes Jotaro not only meets some of the most bizarre Stand users, it’s also done in the most camp way possible. You can see a clear difference with the first two seasons of Jojo: there it was all about […]

Ping Pong – 05 & 06

Episodes 05 and 06 are dedicated to character-development. It’s here where Ping Pong shows that it also knows its stuff in terms of storytelling; the develoment doesn’t start too early or too late, and these two episodes really added depth to all of the different characters, despite that there were no big matches. I’m currently […]

Mushishi – 03 – 06

I have not forgotten about this show. Not at all. I just finished marathoning these four episodes, and holy cheeseballs on a stick! this is the best anime in years! This was everything I could have hoped for and blows just about everything else out of the water. Talk about raw, powerful storytelling. I now […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – 03 – 05

Jojo really is not kind to its females. Every time a hint is even dropped to a girl kicking ass here, it comes with this weird plot-twist that undermines any fighting potential of them. In this arc, it’s the rule that says that your stand will kill you if youaren’t strong enough. And so, Joseph’s […]

Ping Pong – 03 & 04

The opening of Ping Pong wasn’t done in time, so the first two episodes showed a sortof montage as a placeholder. Now we know why, with episode 03 and 04. The creators actually got the single best animator currently in the business to oversee it: Shinya Ohira. This guy understands animation like no other. The […]

Ping Pong – 02

Yes, I know that more people here were involved in making this series beyond Masaaki Yuasa. It’s written by the creator of Tekkon Kinkreet, Taiyo Mashimoto. That guy is awesome. And the combination between those two makes this series even better. Because here’s the thing: anime is significantly different from manga or light novels. Beyond […]

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders – 02

We can never quite get rid of magic fights at a school, now can we, Jojo. Ah well, I forgive it this time, just due to how hilarious it looks seeing these ridiculously bulky men walk around pretending to be high school students. It’s just so over the top, and yet Jojo sets itself apart […]

Mushishi Season 2 – 02

Oh yes. This is it. This is what storytelling should be about: telling real stories about real people, all with their own problems that need to be overcome. And this show does that time and time again in just one episode. I still can’t believe how authentic this series is. The thing is, when I […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]

Kyousogiga Review – 90/100

Everyone’s taste is different, and that’s a wonderful thing because that allows us to have so many different forms of media that all aim toward their own niche. Noucome! You do not want to know how long I have been waiting for a series like this. More than half a decade, at the very least. Finally a series comes along and puts the incredibly overused harem genre in its place. And it actually does it well. Thank you! So to elaborate: the harem […]

I’m not going to dedicate a post for my impression for the final three episodes of this series. It was just too boring to write much about. Silver Spoon Review – 86/100

When Noitamina started airing two series per season, it was amazing. Yahari Ore no Seishun no Love Come wa Machigatteiru Review – 82,5/100

I like surprises, like when a series comes that just turns out to be good against my expectations.
