Now that every show has put out three episodes, I think I’ve found my three favorites of the season so far: Un-Go, Chihayafuru and Last Exile. Un-Go for its storytelling, Chihayafuru for its characters, and this series for its setting.

Because seriously man, is there any limit to the creativity here? Compared to this show, Un-Go seems like a collection of cliches. The background art isn’t just gorgeous here, it’s full of all kinds of original ideas and the architecture in this series is some of the best I’ve seen in years. What’s most important though: the setting here feels alive.

This episode really convinced me that the creators know what they’re doing. On top of showing the main characters mourn about what happened, they also show how the people who live in the same city deal with the recent attacks. The ritual of letting balloons fly upward with candles underneath it was also a really nice touch, but also the way in which the debris of last episode was salvaged was a great addition.

I also have to say kudos to the characters for bringing this all out. This episode showed that the creators know when to be serious and when to be light-hearted. There was not a hint of the creators wanting to downplay the loss of Turan’s family, while at the same time they also didn’t try to make it melodramatic or way too angsty for its own sake.

Good Gonzo, it’s great to see you back again!

I have to love the costume designs too. Look kinda Asian, kinda European, but nothing like typical East-West fusion designs.

Background Art, Costume designs, Character designs, mecha design… for all that, you have to thank Murata Range, my all time favourite designer and drawer. This guy is a genius.

  3. DangerMouse says:

    Same here Immelman.

  4. Oroboros says:

No love for Mirai Nikki, PSGels? :(

  5. skyhack says:

Good to see one of my favorite studios (yes, GONZO) back from the brink, and doing good work.

  6. psgels psgels says:

Oroboros: I like Mirai Nikki, but I don’t consider it to be the best of the season. The three I mentioned above are really doing something to stand out, while Mirai Nikki is just a good over the top suspense show.

  7. Alec says:

my top 3 are the same as Psgels

if it was top 4, then yeah, Mirai Nikki would be there. I just love animes that aren’t overly dark, and has time for the ‘lighter’ side.

  8. DangerMouse says:

“Good to see one of my favorite studios (yes, GONZO) back from the brink, and doing good work.”

    Well said. :)

    Solid episode.

I love the borrowing of the kilt, I don’t know why I didn’t notice it the last two episodes? Though they shouldn’t be wearing trousers underneath!

I think this episode was really good in giving a lot of background information,

but wait, was Fam found at the same time as when the last Augusta died? is that a hint that she may be related to someone really important?

The helicopter thing that the kid was riding looked so cool

And.. was I the only one who saw the candlelit balloons and went

    FIRE HAZARD

    and got worried.

But yes agree with psgels, the world building is top notch.

It’s not often that we get stories that are so expansive.

It doesn’t excite me in the same way as chihayafuru, where I feel personally invested in the characters, but it’s still very good.

  10. My top three of the season are the same as yours and I think for the same reasons. There are plenty of good shows this season, most of which I look forward to each week, but those three are the ones that I want over so I can marathon them all right now.

  11. Israeru says:

I think that this series its not in the same level that the original Last Exile, but its a good one.

Space patrol Luluco is better than it has any right being. Where Kiznaiver failed, Luluco succeeded. Plus on that last announcement of the next trigger anime…so…much…yes!

I’ll freely admit that my bias’s will make me actively just avoid something entirely or have me set with a pre-opinion at times, but at others I’m always willing to give something I’ll probably not like a chance to see if it’ll surprise me.

@Helghast: Thats always the best way to do when looking for other people’s opinion on a fictional work. Watching just one or two people’s opinions becomes sort of a echo chamber.

I’m more of pointing out that I don’t see a bias being a reason to avoid watching someone’s work rather than trying to counter whether guy is too biased or not since I don’t really care either way.

@AidanAK47: Thats because I’m not trying to “counter your point” :D I have watched guy’s series on why Asterisk War sucks and not much of anything else because none of episode titles grabbed me.

That’s why I watch other Youtubers other than just Digibro and then come to my own conclusions afterwards. I think that’s the best way to go about judging anime. I did like his series on the Asterisk War on going into the details on why it sucks so hard and comparing it to Chivalry of a Failed Knight.

I ain’t denying that people have bias. Just that stating that doesn’t really counter y point that Digibro has too much bias and he doesn’t see it.

I’m not being bias at all when I say that Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is the best anime in the history of anime. 5/7. Would Kabaneri again.

@Masky, not sure what kinda point you were trying to make here so let me back up.
I say I don’t like the guy because he’s too biased and he doesn’t know it.
You say how would I know that he doesn’t know he’s too biased? I say I can see if from his videos.
You say everyone has a degree of bias….you aren’t exactly countering my points here.

@AidanAK47: Ay, I’m not trying to issue a challenge here, I’m expressing my belief that “educated opinion” is still a form of bias that everyone has and that is okay :D After all, its not like anyone really judges things in vacuum.

Joker Game Review – 50/100

When experiencing the wave of new anime each season it can get rather tiresome to notice all the teenagers fighting supernatural forces while gathering a harem through seer luck or similarly tired concepts. Mayoiga Review – 78/100

Mayoiga has to be one of the most misunderstood shows in recent years. On a surface, the premise alone has a lot of potential. Joker Game – 12

Upon finishing yet another rather uneventful episode of Joker Game, I began to wonder just what this series had planned for its finale. “How best to top off a rather mediocre series such as this?” I thought to myself. However when looking over general consensus over the episode I found out that I seen the […]

Mayoiga – 12 (end)

Mayoiga pretty much wraps up its story this week and for the series that focus much about anti-climaxes and inconsistency, this ending neatly conclude all of its main loose end. In the final twist of Mayoiga, it turns out that Koharun is God’s daughter (now I understand the inclusion of him in Mayoiga) and all […]

Kiznaiver – 11

I believe I finally figured out something much like Agata of this episode did. Over the course of watching Kiznaiver something in the back of my mind bugged me about it. It was something I couldn’t quite put my finger on but after watching this episode I believe it’s finally hit me. I now know […]

Bungou Stray Dogs – 11

Bungou Stray Dogs strays to another side stories this week, it’s pretty much set up for the second cour, and in that aspect this week is a success one, both gives us a new light to existing characters and makes quite a bit of impression on our new characters. I kind of appreciate how the […]

Joker Game – 11

Sometimes I wonder if Joker Game is intentionally trying to kill my sense of disbelief as it really does pull out some mind numbingly dumb things from time to time. Stella Glow Game Review-60/100

I really should be getting Grand Kingdom or waiting for Mirage Sessions. I somehow managed to get through Lord of […]

Oh my. This game was just utterly, utterly incredible when it came out, so despite disliking the usual remasters (ahem, Valkyria Chronicles), I was pretty stoked when I learned I’d be able to play this again on better hardware.
