Next week’s episode of Aquarion Evol: that will be the time for you to show yourself, Mikono. That will be the time where you need to show that you’re more than a damsel in distress. You have been guided, you have been trained, but so far… you haven’t really done anything. You are very close to stepping in the pit of the generic Kawamori female love interests, and that will be your time to either jump over it or go into a completely different direction. Zessica is about to do it, so you can do that too.

For the rest of this episode: this really was action-packed. Nice action, amazing soundtrack, it all was very entertaining, with the spotlights reserved for Shrade. The tension around this guy is actually much more interesting: he and Amata both have huge powers, but the difference between them is that he actually uses it well. Amata doesn’t know how to use his.

AKB and pandering. Of course you can have a cast with females. When it becomes a problem is when the creators start using moe and fanservice as an excuse for not trying, which unfortunately still happens way too often. AKB0048 doesn’t have that… or didn’t at least. I really began to fear that right the first episode after I decided to blog this show, the characters suddenly got a day off, we got a bath scene, a bunch of very stupid antics and this disturbing focus on pheromones.

So yeah, weakest episode of AKB0048 so far. But as it went on, I did notice something: the sheer amount of characters that the creators managed to stuff into just this episode. Heck, I believe that they actually succeeded in fleshing out the entire cast of named characters, giving everyone a bit of a moment or scene to show more about herself. That’s actually pretty impressive to balance well.

Also, this show doesn’t actively criticize, but some of the ideas in this show nearly seem like they were put in to subtly provoke this. I’m mostly referring to the pheromones talk, but especially that bizarre family that breeds idols to look like each other…

My guess about Mikono is that her ‘power or connecting’ or whatever it is will be used to recombine Amata and Kagura into one person. It’s the only reason I can see for fer to have that power. The question will be however, what personality will dominate in the new person.

As to AKB0048 .. did anyone find this week was very creepy with the succession?

  2. Gottis says:

Yeaaaaaaaaah. I usually tend to shy away from all female cast shows like AKB0048, or rather, I avoid it like the plague, but so far AKB0048 has actually managed to draw me in, since it kept away from the usual moe clichés. This episode… not so much. It was a chore to sit through, with the only highlight being that dance teacher. I am hoping for a better episode next week. I guess I’m – when it comes down to it – just one of those fujoshi gals who needs either a well balanced cast (gender wise) or an all male (or mostly male) cast to be able to enjoy anime. *shallow omg*

  3. kuromitsu says:

    It’s not that Amata doesn’t know how to use is power, it’s just that Kagura’s power is so off the scale it’s ridiculous. Being able to reverse whatever he wants is already a pretty “unfair” power as it was demonstrated in the graveyard fight (reversing a punch? the car’s gear? what?? ^^;; and he once threatened Amata with reversing his blood flow, now seriously, come on!), and one has to wonder why it never occurred to them to use Kagura to reverse the women-turned-men back to women. But in this episode he is also able to do stuff that is completely unrelated to reversing. Like, blasting Amata into a wall. I can’t see what was reversed there, unless we’re supposed to believe that he reversed Amata not crashing into a wall. Meanwhile, Amata… can fly. ^^;;

  4. Kamen Grinder says:

Hey look at that guy, he is fighting with himself!

Let’s pretend we didn’t see anything.

  5. RABUJOI says:

It’s not surprising Shrade is a more interesting character than Amata; after all, he’s WHOLE, not half of a whole like Amata. We’re thinking Mikono’s “connecting” power may play a role in reconstituting Amata and Kagura into a whole. It would certainly solve her problem of who to choose. Of course, that’s if exposure to Altair doesn’t make turn her into a boy. ;)

  6. DmonHiro says:

    AKB0048 05: Suddenly, death-flags, dozens of them!

  7. Space Eater says:

Aquarion is finally filling up some “obvious” holes, from Amata and Kagura existence to Zessica’s fate from crushing debris. Also, how many times can Shrade avoid all the death flags set on him? This guy must have some Chuck Norris blood in him.

Altogether there is no good explanation as to why Berserk has been on the fringes for the last 20 years. The silver lining is that it looks like things are picking up for the franchise- with a new series, two new games and frequent manga releases- so here’s hoping we get a much bigger budget for the next cour, and god willing maybe even a studio change. And I’m getting greedy, but gimme that From Software Berserk game! That would be an instant cash mine.

@Vyse: I was actually thinking of that, and the dark mature content is definitely a factor. Yet looking at what’s trending at the moment, with AoT and Kabaneri, it seems that the more violent stuff are bankable now. And it’s not like anime is stranger to adapting material that hasn’t finished yet. So I’m guessing that Miura is hard to work with probably, and maybe he’s tight about giving studios the license.

I like it better when animes are different then the manga because normally i know how everything will end after reading the manga.

And I’m more than open for an anime to do things a bit differently from the source, I mean look at the new berserk they included an action scene that wasn’t in the manga, I liked that.

@Mike: Makoto Takahashi! Makoto Takahashi! I know who he is, I spent a while looking at his art, best example of good oldschool shoujo style. He also is credited with kickstarting the shoujo-ai genre I think…
@Bam: flowers of evil both improved on and took away from its source material.

Furthermore, it’s not as if Berserk is so special by itself that a decent adaptation is automatically impossible. You’re watching one right now. If you think otherwise than it boils down to personal preference.

@Vyse It’s obviously not trying to cater to children, the studio knows its audience. I wouldn’t automatically assume that just because it’s an anime adaptation that it’s an attempt to please everyone.

Because the story is so dark and so violent, its hard to cater to a middle ground audience that includes kids or maybe even adolescents.

Hey Bam, the reason for Berserk’s neglect is how unadaptable it is to other media. As a manga it stands as a monolith. but the thematic and graphical content -as well as the long and rather convoluted presentation – don’t lend well to either anime or games.

Yeah, you could even easily do a spin of series in the berserk universe, it’s that well thought out unique and huge. I dreamt myself continously into that world – mostly because of it’s bright, shimmering side, which aren’t mentioned that often because of it’s ultra dark counterpart.

Truth be told, I’ve never seen any of the EVA franchise, and it’s not normal since EVA is a must for any anime viewer. I don’t really know the reason why I keep myself from watching it, maybe both because mecha is not my favorite genre, and the hype of EVA is just overwhelming that […]

Berserk(2016) – 03

Forgive me for the delay on this particular post but I must admit that in light of Berserks quality my interest in covering it has somewhat declined. I know that for every episode to come I will have to dance around the elephant in the room but this series isn’t making that easy for me. […]

Orange – 03

So this week we finally encounter a love rival. Of course with a romance drama show like Orange there had to be someone who would stand on their way right? Except there’s not much of a rival really since Naho never stands a chance against the new girl Ueda. As she learns hard and clear […]

91 Days – 02

At this point I think it’s clear what kind of show we are getting. It’s not Hitman Reborn which essentially uses its mafia inspiration as window dressing for shounen battles. Nor is it Baccano with a silly yet funny atmosphere combining the prohibition setting and supernatural. No, what we have here is the old school […]

Thunderbolt Fantasy – 02

Sometimes there’s a show that so campy and fun that you just can’t help but enjoy watching it, and then sometimes there’s a show that completely takes you by surprise by how unique it is. Thunderbolt Fantasy offers both of these in a neat package and further showcases the richness of animation as a medium […]

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 16

Looks like the new opening and ending won’t be getting much use in this second cour either, not that I am complaining of course. This week I  wouldn’t be surprised if people were getting sick of Subaru as his actions continue to be erratic and destructive. The ending of the last episode gave hope that […]

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei – 02

It is safe to say that to get the most out of this series, you have got to be a Fate fan. There are numerous little easter eggs calling back to it, even Kirei’s signature “Rejoice” line. However I say even casual fans could get something out of this series as well. Provided they made […]

Orange – 02

Let me say up front that I am not fond with either romance or melodrama. We usually mistaken romance for love but whenever I think about love I’d think of commitment. Melodrama don’t do well to me either as I always feel forced, like most of the time when the show goes big, emotional scenes, […]

My Life as a Courgette (2016) Movie Review – 82/100

It’s never easy to make a good family’s animation. For movies aim at adults, the filmmakers can easily get themselves loose, go crazy and the audience can still get it. But for kids, these movies might be one of the first movies they’ve ever seen and that’s a huge responsibility. They have to aware of […]

Flying witch Review – 86/100

As I mentioned in one of my weekly posts, most of the reason why a slice-of-life anime show don’t work well is not because there’s nothing happen, but more because the cast isn’t interesting enough or the show tends to repeat the things that we already know. I’m happy to say that this is not […]
