I must say, this episode found quite an interesting place for its characters to fight: inside an aquarium. They also used this whale skeleton, and I have to say that it’s quite a bit better than “generic street 232″.

But that was not what this episode was really about: it was about the villains. Even though most of the screentime showed the lead characters, it detailed the back-story for this series, who Samus is, what he does, why he left his strongest enemy on an island instead of just killing her, and it’s revealed that he instead just declared her dead.

Also, everything happens for a reason. The show will very likely build further upon this theme for the rest of the series, but for now it’s already quite interesting in the way that the dead girl used to say this. After dying…. this left quite an impression on Yoshino. Also, this may have been me missing something, but has it already been revealed how she died?

At least we now know why he has the hairstyle he has: it’s something she gave to him. Should have seen that coming. I do wonder what happened to his glasses, though. Did he end up wearing contacts?
Rating: 5/8 (Great)

    Samus eh?

in short, this episode was really boring and again filled with explanations about the same thing over and over again.

If you’re finding this boring it’s best to drop it now. It’s not an action show. Personally I’m really enjoying the characterizations.

    • HunterWulf says:

Boring !!! tell me you are kidding .. please XD

And what explanations are you talking about !!? .. there are barely any here (and they didn’t last more than a min or two) .. the rest of the episodes was filled with action and more back-story revelations through plot-heavy flash-backs .. the scene where Hakaze showcases the full extent of her power by blowing a huge chunk of a mountain and trapping everyone in mid-air was an amazing scene the not only showed why she is the clan leader (making all the men in the clan tremble before her powers even her own brother) but also showed her spunky and carefree personality in action.

Then the twist in the end !!! sigh .. if all that is boring then probably it’s a good time to drop the show XD

I’m starting to warm up to this show a bit more but I still prefer magi as the shounen action show for the season. From reading the manga myself I’d wonder what you’ll think of the upcoming twists in the next two episodes.
I’m curious did you watch this episode raw or with different subtitles to crunchyrolls? The subtitles in the episode I watched said Samon rather than samus.

    • meow says:

Oooooh. No spoilers plz. XD I’m on the edge of my seat here.

    • over_seer says:

I think every fansub group working on this is using CR script as a base; it’s very most likely a typo. Usually there’s not a reason to change the spelling of names.

Probably Samus is the more common five-letter name beginning with “Sam” for people to type, because of a certain video game bounty hunter.

  4. meow says:

and it’s revealed that he instead just declared her dead.

Are you sure that’s all he did? I don’t know. The story seems vague enough that I wonder if they really did kill her and whether the two kids have been talking to a ghost caught in some kind of limbo. And it would fit the Hamlet parallel. I thought Hamlet’s father’s role would be played by Aika but instead it was Hakaze all along. What a plot twist.

    • meow says:

This silence….did nobody notice it or was it too obvious to mention? Or am I way off base? Has everybody read ahead except me?

      • HunterWulf says:

I totally agree, he definitely did more than just “declare her dead” … but right now this twist can still go in all sort of directions … It seems Psgels wasn’t paying attention but Hoshimura (the guy they met at the end of the episode) said explicitly that he confirmed Hakaze’s death personally .. then in the preview Hakaze says “there is no such thing as ghosts” .. it’s kinda confusing if she is alive then who is the person that Hoshimura thought was Hakaze dead body (could it have been that Aki’s body was used to fake Hakaze’s death .. but why her !!!?) and if Hakaze is dead then who is there on the island .. if she died in the barrel and never got out on the island then who the heck sent the “message in a bottle” with the communication talisman she is using to talk to Mahiro, and who is the owner of the bones (no pun intended) in the barrel !!? .. aghhhhhhhhh.

After some deep thinking i decided to wait for the next episode becasue i think this plot twist will fully manifest when we get Hoshimura talking with Hakaze which will happen in the next ep.

        • meow says:

My thought is that wooden statue that Mahiru has been using that we thought was a communication device might actually house Hakaze’s spirit. Again, it’s just a theory though. I may be looking too hard for a parallel to Old Hamlet in this story. Hakaze seems to be a shoe-in for Prospero, if you ask me. But still, an interesting cliffhanger.

  5. Entrav says:

Aika has been the cause for everything. There’s a reason everything happens eh?…

  6. Son Gohan says:

Even if Hoshimura saw Hakaze’s dead body, it could have been an illusion or a body double. Maybe they killed Aika because she resembled Hakaze, so that they could use her body to trick the other clansmen?

    • meow says:

Interesting theory. At least there’s a link now to why that clan murdered Aika. But that’s one gruesome plot twist. If true, Mahiru and even Yoshino will probably go nuts. Was there a body switch thing in Hamlet?

  7. Trass says:

Yeah, come to think of it, Aika looks a lot like Hakaze, maybe minus the eye color.

  8. Saigo says:

Waiting for shinsekai and jojo, both awesome.

    in 6 and 5 episodes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SAO

  9. Saigo says:

    Just superior to SAO

  10. Commenter says:

Time is out of joint huh.
I smell a time travel plot! I’m guessing that they’re trapped in the past or something like that. Though the body switch thing also seems reasonable.

  11. DangerMouse says:

Totally agreeing with the positive impressions, I’m loving the heck out of this show. As noted, I’m pretty glad it’s mixing it up making the story and its twists and the action all equally important, it feels like it’s at least aiming for that same area that FMA does which is great.

@CloudedAnime, Normally I am not too keen on others using this Shoutbox to push their blogs but I will allow it this time. (Pretty certain that compliment was insincere and being pasted everywhere else you are pushing that blog. The joys of self promotion…)
Just ease off on the exclamation marks there and keep at it.

I was very surprised to see noblesse was adapted, I read early chapters of the webtoon before it really got going but just fell out of reading it.

Did anyone watch the Noblesse OVA? I thought the first half had rushed pacing but it got pretty good after that. Not to mention the animation is just gorgeous, they managed to get it to look like the webtoon.

Boku dake ga Inai Machi – 05

When it rains it pours and Boku dake isn’t pulling any punches. Hinazuki is gone and the only hint of her we see is what looks to be her dead body in front of her parents, one of whom is panicking. With this we have two possibilities. Either they happened upon Hinazuka’s dead body or […]

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu – 04

Well it seems like I have to eat my words as Yakumo is quite the ladies man. Which is odd when he clearly doesn’t have any interest in interacting with women. Yakumo has a fruitful love life despite his apathy towards love in general. Yakumo and Sukeroku’s relationship has certainly gotten more easygoing as the […]

Schwarzesmarken – 04

This episode starts with a groan as we meet a new member of the cast, that being Theodor’s sister who on first sight hugs with with the ever so traditional “Onii-chan!” The sister does bring some good developments to the table, namely the machination the Stasi has in store for her, but I really wish […]

Boku dake ga Inai Machi – 04

There certainly is a layer of dread from this episodes beginning as we see happy events unfold. Things are looking up, history is changing, Kayo is finally getting out of an abusive relationship with her mother and finding happiness. But much like Satou is feeling, there is a unease at these developments. Things are going […]

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu – 03

From the looks of things this series will be focusing primarily on the past of Yakumo as the stylish opening seems to place emphasis on the characters of the flashback. Rakugo is surprisingly abset this week as World War II causes Yakumo to be left behind as his Teacher and Sukeroku go out to entertain […]

Schwarzesmarken – 03

Schwarzesmarken remains a strange specimen of an anime, while still not excelling it is clear it has the potential to. So why is it not a great anime? Well it’s beating the same point as my last post but I do think characterisation is key here. In this episode we had two characters introduced whose […]

Boku dake ga Inai Machi – 03

When it comes to matters of time travel, it’s always a wonder to consider just what rules it follows. Time travel, much like alternate realities is one of the biggest can of worms to open when writing a story. Mainly because it demands the viewer keeps in mind a series of characters, settings and event which […]

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu – 02

So we enter a flashback on how the master became the man he is as well as how he met Hatsuda. It’s interesting to see the man who always seemed to be in control be a person of much more vulnerable status. As a child we see the aspects that he will ebody in the […]

Schwarzesmarken – 02

Two episodes in and I certainly can feel that Schwarzesmarken is missing something to truly make it work. The setting has no problems and what’s presented is interesting but for some reason this isn’t as engaging as it should be. One could blame the art which had some spotty parts during this episode or the […]

Gangsta. – 58/100

Gangsta is an anime with a lot of things going for it. A mature cast, gritty themes, a interesting setting and a trio of main characters who can carry the show. However due to a number of factors it never quite reached its potential. The main trio of characters are unconventional and quite interesting with […]

Gakkou Gurashi! – 80/100

Gakkou is one with a good facade as promotional material would have you believe it was some dime a dozen moe slice of life. I was one who wasn’t fooled by the cute cuddly exterior but I was truly surprised with just how good this anime ended up being. Gakkou is one of those rare […]

Little Witch Academia The Enchanted Parade – 81/100

I wonder when it was that a film being childish became a flaw. As a medium grows it takes steps to aim to mature itself and seek a more intellectual level of presenting entertainment. Animation did it as Anime aimed to explore terrontry that cartoons refuse to explore and video games only recently broke away […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks Review – 85/100

Shirobako Review – 80/100

When you see a harem anime and sigh as the breasts of the female lead jiggle with every step and wind that can flip a skirt it’s easy to forget that somewhere in Japan a group of people worked hard to get that jiggle right and draw each frame of animation. The hardships of the […]

Nerawareta Gakuen Review – 84/100

Let me talk a bit about Ryousuke Nakamura. For a long time, this guy was my hero. He started off as an assistant director to Monster, in my opinion a big reason why that series got such a ridiculously solid adaptation, and then in 2008 he came with the groundbreaking Mouryou no Hako. No TV-series […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]

Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Lovecome o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru Review – 80/100

Noucome! You do not want to know how long I have been waiting for a series like this. More than half a decade, at the very least. Finally a series comes along and puts the incredibly overused harem genre in its place. And it actually does it well. Thank you! So to elaborate: the harem […]
