This show has one very misleading ED. I really thought that it would be a happy cheerful adventure featuring the three lead characters having fun. This episode showed that the atmosphere in this series is in reality muh darker. With the slavery themes this already was to be expected, but this episode really took the cake.

Alibaba’s past was… gloomy. The creators really tried to show how poverty can drive people to do strange things, and the whole story about Alibaba’s friend growing up to be the leader of a bunch of thieves is definitely a great one. This episode lso loved to use its facial expressions for that with a much more exaggerated look than normal, which also did quite some wonders in bringing up emotions.

The tension is mostly between Alibaba and Morgiana, the latter of whom will probably have a lot of trouble accepting what’s going on. I really liked how she just dragged Alibaba over the rooftops to Aladdin for a talk. The big danger right now is for this show to devolve into too much angst: making it too one-sided in a way. I’m not sure what it exactly is, but it feels weird, like something is missing from it or the show is trying too hard to get to this angst.
Rating: 5/8 (Great)

oh no worries theirs a epic fight coming :D

  2. TheUltimateReaper says:

Whats missing is the understanding of the psyche of a male protagonist I think. Alibaba had been dangerously underdeveloped from the start. Morgiana is much more developed, and she’s cool. Aladdin is also well developed. So far though, Alibaba has been a little lack luster. Though I feel he may develop better as this story goes on.

Women seem to have a knack for writing darker things, and I enjoy it quite reverently. I expect this story to be interesting, and I’m rather looking forward to it.

I would have preferred a childish tale full of naive adventures.

The gloomy parts don’t seem to fit.

  4. Airies says:

I think this show is getting really boring by doing these ‘darker’ episodes. It would be better if it was more episodic….

You may want to drop Magi while you’re still ahead then because there’s nothing episodic about it. The happy-go-lucky episodes at the start are more or less over with.

I can’t wait for the next few parts to be animated. Reading it in the manga is great. It’s staying very faithful to the manga which is great. The past with Kasim is depressing and likewise with Alibaba.

  6. Rachnid says:

I also feel there’s something missing, maybe Reaper’s got it right.
One other thing, I can’t shake the feeling that Alibaba is a girl, might just be the chest-wrap that I usually only see on anime girls. But then again “he” kinda seems way more sensitive(emotionally) than your usual male MC.

  7. Trass says:

Like I have said multiple times a few episodes ago, Magi is really dark for a shounen adventure series.

But don’t worry, make no mistake because it STILL is a shounen adventure. You will still see epic fights and power up arcs.

yes one of the epic fights will be in episode 10

Although it looks like Liden Films is working with a decent budget, the 3d models weren’t really that impressive. They’re actually pretty lucky to have Studio Millepensee on board as well; since their still frames and 2D in-betweens were actually really good.

The song from Gut’s nightmare sequence in the wagon was good tho. That might be the Harasawa insert track.

@Aidan: I already favorited their page. That’s incredibly. It’s like Kotaku hired a bunch of bronies to write reviews.

@Bam, don’t think it’s a parody. After all it’s the same site that posted this comedy gem of an article.

I’m starting to question Miura, and wondering how much of the genius of it was the 97 series director Naohito Takahashi, I mean I did watch the series before reading the manga. His choices are starting to make sense: leaving Puck out, ending the show right at the eclipse. He knew Miura will never finish it, and that is the high point of the whole story.

@Aidan: this article has to be a parody. I refuse to believe otherwise.
The original’s pilot was disjointed and messy, but it kept the dark atmosphere and the somber tone. It still captured your attention and got you to watch the second episode, which was the real hook. This upbeatness … it’s just wrong.

And hearing the characters voiced in Japanese, it reminds me just how the dub for Berserk sat much better for me.

Bungou Stray Dogs Review – 62/100

Well, we don’t usually give a review on the first cour of anime show, given the fact that the second part will air next autumn season. But since I’m not certain I would cover its second half, plus I don’t think this series will improve itself, I might as well give Bungou Stray Dogs a […]

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 13

When I heard about this arc being hard to watch I readied myself for a number of things. I was prepared to see Subaru die gruesomely, to see him tortured and broken. However while I was ready to see him get destroyed by others; I didn’t expect him to be the architect of his own […]

Kiznaiver Review – 60/100

Kiznaiver is a very different faire from Studio Triggers other works in that it takes a more serious tone and has a writer who tends to go more for the melodramatic. This is a tale about a group of very different people gathered together and have their pain linked to one another. In an effort […]

Kiznaiver -12

This was certainly pure narrative confusion at it’s zenith and in that regard I don’t mean that the events depicted were hard to understand but rather a general confusion on what mood it wants to go out on. In this episode we had comedic, drama and climatic showdown all hastily weaved together to try and […]

Bungou Stray Dogs – 12 (end)

And we get to the end of Bungou Stray Dogs, but this last episode doesn’t offer any conclusive ending, instead feel more like a set up episode for the next season. This last episode functions like a typically Bungou Stray Dogs’ episode; there are many good things to say about it, mainly the technical triumphs […]

Joker Game Review – 50/100

So when something like Joker game comes along and takes a road less traveled with it’s story, naturally I am well on […]

Joker Game – 12

Upon finishing yet another rather uneventful episode of Joker Game, I began to wonder just what this series had planned for its finale. “How best to top off a rather mediocre series such as this?” I thought to myself. However when looking over general consensus over the episode I found out that I seen the […]

Stella Glow Game Review-60/100

I really should be getting Grand Kingdom or waiting for Mirage Sessions. I somehow managed to get through Lord of […]

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir Game Review – 87/100

Oh my. This game was just utterly, utterly incredible when it came out, so despite disliking the usual remasters (ahem, Valkyria Chronicles), I was pretty stoked when I learned I’d be able to play this again on better hardware. It came out really late into the PS2’s lifetime in 2007, so at the time, I […]
