Um, Kamisama Hajimemashita, you’re ending next week. Don’t you think that with this episode, you’re heading to a rather flimsy climax? I mean I dunno, but this just screams “crap, we’ve run out of time! Quick, throw in some really powerful monster and have the main couple split up!”

I guess it had it coming, but the style of this episode definitely was different from usual. The jokes were ess sharp and the plot took this turn that just screams that the script was rushed. The final episode had better be very good to make up for this, because it’s an episode that I’ve seen so many times before.

A few of the things that did manage to set this episode apart: Nanami’s feelings of being useful. Okay, they came totally out of nowhere, but heck. They give her character. This just is not fitted for the final climax of the story. Problem is that this is the thing that I’ll remember this show by, so I really hope that the creators can still make something out of this. Please…

I expected this to happen honestly. Tonari no Kaibutsu is such a better show.

  2. Firechick says:

Huh?! It’s ending next week?! Wasn’t it supposed to be 26 episodes instead of 13?

  3. kuromtisu says:

Rushed? How? It was perfectly well done. Sure, so far it’s the usual case of “we need some cheap conflict to resolve in the finale” but that doesn’t mean it’s rushed.

And as for the jokes, the visual gags, especially Mizuki with his flute, were just as sharp as ever.

    • Puran says:

It was a *bit* rushed, in the sense that a sudden catastrophy comes from no-where (which btw, the miasma, and the magic (cursed? whatever) box getting unsealed are not part of the manga). But I think psgels was too self conscious about it being the penultimate episode, because it really wasn’t that bad otherwise.

      • kuromitsu says:

But the miasma didn’t come from nowhere, it was Otohiko testing Nanami, not for the first time. Maybe it wasn’t in the manga but it made sense in the context of the anime.

I don’t think there was anything rushed, Nanami wasn’t out of character, I have no idea why psgels thought the episode was any worse than the ones before it. :/ Maybe he expected something else, but that’s not exactly the anime’s fault, is it.

        • Puran says:

Yeah, but, psgels (and other people) like their endings to use things that are built up through-out the series.

As I said, if it was any episode it would be fine, but as a penultimate episode it looks like an attempt to raise the stakes to make the finale more dramatic. Which is kind of what they did actually. The way Otohiko tests nanami is the manga is more subtle.

Either way, personally, I saw the episode without knowing it was the penultimate ep, and thought it was fine.

  4. Kaiserin Emma says:

Given that theres not much time left of this show I think it would be better spent adapting the events in volume 11 of the manga, that is more on Nanami’s background.

  5. mistress_kisara says:

It was not the best episode but nonetheless very enjoyable :P

  6. Witchy says:

I don’t think they’re going for a really great climax. It’s because the shrine festival isn’t the main climax of the whole story. I think they are going for an open ending. The miasma might get resolved. The monster might get vanquished, but what they’ll be trying to accomplish is Nanami “starting the being a god thing.” From the start they couldn’t cover the romance in 13 eps; that encompasses all 90 chapters of the manga.
And no, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is not a better show. It’s messier than KH and tries to get deep—it’s forcefeeding. I read the manga of that too, and while I enjoyed it sometimes, I could I’d read many more manga that has a better and neater storyline.

    • Witchy says:

Oh and this shrine festival arc just makes them cover up to chapter 30, so eliminating chap 79& 50(ep10) and chap 37&38(ep 11), there’s about 50+ chaps left to adapt. They should make a second season…

      • Kaiserin Emma says:

So roughly around chapter 40 or 41 I should probably pick up the manga at then when the anime leaves off? Thanks witchy.

    • Kamiorika says:

Thirteen episodes is just not enough to cover the manga. At all. There really should be another season.

  7. rufe says:

In the end, it was not a very good show. Looking back my favorite episode was when Mizuki goes to Tokyo. -_-

I WAS hoping that the show would end with her completing her reverse-harem as a contrast to the common harem genre, but it looks like that will not happen either…

    • Avalon says:

I disagree completely. This was a MUCH better show than I originally expected and had great main characters. I say it was one of the surprises of the season.

I honestly only started liking Mizuki recently.

  8. Avalon says:

It really bugs me when people base a series off its ending. Yes I understand that is an important part, but that is not everything. Here is an example for me. Soul Eater has probably one of the worst endings I’ve seen (imo) and yet I still love the show because everything else was awesome.

I truly hope psgels that you will remember this show for more than just the ending since it more than deserves that.

  9. kero says:

For me this episode felt rather rushed, i don’t know if it was because I was conscious it was ending.

However I absolutely loved the running gag of Mizuki with the flute, I laughed each time they showed him!

I’ve really warmed to Mizuki in the past few episodes.

What often surprises me even more is how different some people can be apart from their Internet personas, from an Internet cynic to a meek person irl. Thats to be expected but fascinating.

@Kaiser Surprise reactions are to be expected from faceless interactions over a chatroom, so it’s pretty normal. But that’s a first, I’ve always thought I looked pretty Italian.

@Kaiser Oh really, I had this image of a 30 some-ish year old Swede having blond hair, which to my surprise wasn’t the case, and in yours to an extent as well. As Supermario said it’s impossible to not have any kind of superficial image in your mind.

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 08

I feel bad for the artists and animators who made the opening and ending for this show as they don’t seem to be getting much use. Not that I am complaining of course as if the choice is between a catchy theme song and more content then content wins every time. Though it is a […]

Kiznaiver – 07

To some this may be the strongest episode of Kiznaiver to date. However to someone like myself I find myself mixed on what I just witnessed. I have said before that what I like about this series are the aspects which are distinctly Trigger which would be it’s sense of wacky humor and character chemistry. […]

Mayoiga – 08

Again this week Mayoiga succeed at bringing a big screw-you to us audience. The cliffhanger last week is quickly revealed, and we come to learn that Masaki is not a ghost, nor is she a witch, but simply that… she had visited the Lost Village before. Big surprise! It really is a ridiculous anti-climax, but […]

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress – 06

If you haven’t heard by now, the second season of Attack on Titan has been delayed till 2017 because Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is far too awesome for Studio Wit to handle in a single year. I really couldn’t care less about the delay since I already know what’s going to happen in season […]

Bungou Stray Dogs – 07

This week the plot revolving the Azure King was resolved and it raises the conflict of sense of justice between Dazai and Kunikida. Like what I suspected last week, all the new characters are in play in this episode and now I get the hang of Bungou Stray Dogs storytelling now. The new characters will […]

Joker Game – 07

You know, I am beginning to wonder just how do those lessons go at the D-Agency. Is it something like “Ok, class. Today I will teach you how to summon dolphins with a whistle. After that we will go over the magic rituals of Aleister Crowley and finally have a refresher on the finer points […]

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress OST Review

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World – 07

A certain criticism has loomed over this series from its very inception. As the series continued people have asked the question “How can Subaru brush off his horrific deaths so easily?” Today we have the answer to that question and that answer is that he doesn’t. It’s been building incognito in the background all this […]

Kiznaiver- 06

This week we have focus on the problems of a specific member of the Kiznaiver, that member being Maki.Well my assumption about Maki’s problem turned out to be incorrect though I did think compensated dating is a bit too serious for the tone of this show while proposing it. Her actual problem turned out to […]

Schwarzesmarken – 65/100

Schwarzesmarken is a strange title in that it has a setting with fantastic potential yet the story is dampened by a rushed pacing and Missing characterisation. Despite this there are signs of a greater story under the hood and at times that story can shine despite haphazard adaption. The Stasi make for a great villain […]

Boku dake ga Inai Machi – 85/100

Gangsta. – 58/100

Gangsta is an anime with a lot of things going for it. A mature cast, gritty themes, a interesting setting and a trio of main characters who can carry the show. Gakkou Gurashi! – 80/100

Little Witch Academia The Enchanted Parade – 81/100

Shirobako Review – 80/100

Nerawareta Gakuen Review – 84/100

Let me talk a bit about Ryousuke Nakamura. For a long time, this guy was my hero. He started off as an assistant director to Monster, in my opinion a big reason why that series got such a ridiculously solid adaptation, and then in 2008 he came with the groundbreaking Mouryou no Hako. No TV-series […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]
