This was one heck of an episode for Psycho Pass. Just like Robotics;Notes, actually. The point where everything gets turned around.

Unfortunately I had been spoiled that someone would die in this episode, and as the episode went on it was pretty clear who would be the poor victim. The way in which it happened though, I totally did not see that coming. I loved the end of the episode because of that. In fact, this episode pulled lots of surprise twists that were just awesome. Makishima Shougo being apprehended by his own pride by not taking into account that Kougami didn’t come alone gave Akane a great moment for herself. I also love how she didn’t give in, and just apprehended the guy, instead of giving into her emotions. Now that’s a strong female character there who knows her own limits.

It’s very interesting that the main villain has now been apprehended though. From this moment there will be two possibilities: he’ll escape, or the main protagonists will somehow aid him in bringing down the Sibil System. I mean, Kagari’s death will be a trigger for a lot of things for Kougami and Akane, however you pull it. The Psycho Pass will become useless in one way or the other, the question now is “how”, and “what will that lead to”.

Production IG also rocks lately with their animation. First there was this string of excellent fight scenes that I’ve missed for so long, and then there was Jousei Kasei’s image as her skin was removed. That was a really powerful image for her. I loved the framing and the impact it made, and it was just perfect for that scene. Why she’s an android at this point is anyone’s guess, but it made the setting here even more interesting.

For a while I wondered why there was so little security in the building, if something really important is hidden there that absolutely cannot be found by anyone. But heck, I believe that this is the result of people’s Psycho Pass: apparently nobody with a clear conscience could live with something like what went on in the Sibil System’s core, whatever the hell it may be, so the maintenance and security of that building just had to be replaced with robots out of necessity. I guess that that’s why the police operates with people with a high crime hue: because this leads to less free people in the police force, and a smaller chance that one of them will find out about the tower and act on their impulses: like this episode showed, they can be easily killed off by a dominator that way. Whether this was the most efficient tactic for this though…. I have no idea.

I’m hoping that Kagari isn’t really dead and managed to escape somehow. It doesn’t look very likely given the situation, but it’s still possible, since we didn’t see him actually die. Of course, if we find out later that there are bits of Kagari strewn all around the room, that’ll be the end of it…(And if he did escape, Shion would know about it, so she would need to cover it up or also flee.)

    • Energizer says:

I remember the dominator saying “Non Lethal Paralyzer”. I could be wrong though

      • Cytl says:

It said Paralyzer but then it started to make weird sounds and changed it’s shape to the decomposer. I suppose she couldn’t kill Kagari with his current psycho-pass color so she hacked his own Dominator.

    • Cytl says:

Kasei didn’t use the eliminator mode, she used the decomposer, the same thing used against the robot in the first episodes. If Kagari was shot with it (and at point-blank-range I can’t see how he didn’t) then not a single trace should remain of him. Let’s remember this is written by Gen, and hope it’s something hard to find in his works.

    • Kaiserin Emma says:

I think Gen wrote himself into a bit of a corner here. The possible character death in this episode being the main issue for me. I said before that if he’s dead we won’t be able to sympathize with him due to his poor development but I’m also thinking now if he survives the show will be even worse off cause it’ll be seen as copping out.

      • Cytl says:

Not every death is made to sympathize with the victim (of course this always helps), some of them have as a purpose to develop the other characters. Just like how Yuki’s dead was mostly for the sake of developing Akane (or how the first death in Madoka was for the sake of developing the main character).

  2. Kaiserin Emma says:

Although I had my qualms with the scene between Akane and Shougo to see her pull a strong character moment like that was a long time coming and thats something I guess.

  3. Cytl says:

It feels weird to post so many times in the same thread but I really loved this episode. I believe Kogami will side with Shougo, the 2nd OP seems to hint towards it.

“It’s very interesting that the main villain has now been apprehended though. From this moment there will be two possibilities: he’ll escape, or the protagonists will somehow aid him in bringing down the Sibil System.”

OR .. option 3, he’ll be plugged into the SYBIL system and become a core component of the system he was trying to break down. It looks like that is the secret of the basement.

    • Oroboros says:

I’m surprised nobody is really trying to speculate about what the awful secret in the basement really is.

      • Mal says:

Well I thought it was some sort of lovecraftian monster given Urobuchi’s writing history. Actually spoiled myself (NoitamnA has a cafe which airs the next Psychopass episode every weekend, you can find spoilers). The show did hinted at what the Sybil System really is.

  5. troy says:

most peopleon the net seem tosubscribe to some varition of “Human brains” or as good folks at tv tropes would ut it “powered by th forsaken child” theory.

  6. pat says:

I think the whole story is based on The Minority Report so the big secret is rather obvious.

  7. jonas says:

“It’s very interesting that the main villain has now been apprehended though”.

I think this episode showed that the government is the main villian of this series.

  8. TheUltimateReaper says:

Kind of disappointing, I always end up rooting for the villains. I never liked the Sybil System or whatever. I guess, we just have to wait and see.

  9. Ronny says:

Just watched ep 17. Not going to spoil it but you should watch it before someone has the chance to spoil it because OH MY GOD it might be worthy of another 6/8 from you psgels.

  10. DangerMouse says:

Man, this ep was so good. Can’t wait to for the next one to pick up where we left off!

Knights of Sidonia S2: Battle for Planet Nine review – 73/100

The second season of Sidonia makes a number of mistakes that a lot of second seasons do. That namely being that the anime slows down and introduces characters and conflicts that are often resolved in a undetermined to exist, third season. A new antagonist is introduced, whom does very little in the season and only […]

Knights of Sidonia S2 – 12

Tanikaze’s rendezvous with Benizumie looks to have been cut short as Izana interrupted with some hacker magic. The entire sequence being as uncomfortable and disturbing as you could imagine. I still wonder just what was her goal in doing all this to Tanikaze. Was it some method of killing him or just some really kinky […]

Knights of Sidonia S2 – 11

It’s quite the coincidence that both shows I am covering have decided to use their last episodes to make up for the season’s shortcomings. This will be a short post as while action packed episodes are great to watch, they make it hard to bring up topics to talk about. Guana look to be imitating […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 24

Now this is more like it. Well as they say, better late than never and this was at least the best moment to bring back the quality. All I ask is where this was three episodes ago which it could have made all the difference in the world. Admittedly this episode has made me a […]

Knights of Sidonia S2 – 10

Unfortunately this wasn’t the time for Izana to become an ace pilot though she did at least show some ingenuity in her escape from gauna. Instead the spotlight falls once again to Tsugumi and Tanikaze. A lot of the fight scenes before the challenger appeared was to shown that Tsugumi and Tanikaze have great teamwork […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 23

Sometimes it’s hard being a veteran anime fan and a huge Fate Franchise fan. I sit down to watch the latest episode of this series and I want to shut up the cynical critic in the back of my brain pointing out everything that is wrong with this episode. But as events I adored from […]

Knights of Sidonia S2 – 9

Though the majority of the episode was of the same antics I have been complaining about in previous episodes, it’s nice to see Sidonia get back to what it does best. Dire situations and sci-fi mecha action. Izana being pushed into the role of scouting with a new weapon has to be the best path […]

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks – 22

A fairly uneventful episode this week.In some ways for me that’s good as it allows me to go into detail about the nature of the ever so popular CGI dolpins. But first let’s speak about what happened. Our three heroes had a strategy meeting discussing how to deal with Gilgamesh and the grail while all […]

Knights of Sidonia S2 – 8

I think something is wrong when I consider a protagonist from a movie these characters are watching a more compelling lead than our current one. I was surprised when starting the episode to see a sudden rise in visual quality only for it to turn out to be a movie within an anime. Actually I […]

Little Witch Academia The Enchanted Parade – 81/100

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks Review – 85/100

Shirobako Review – 80/100

When you see a harem anime and sigh as the breasts of the female lead jiggle with every step and wind that can flip a skirt it’s easy to forget that somewhere in Japan a group of people worked hard to get that jiggle right and draw each frame of animation. The hardships of the […]

Nerawareta Gakuen Review – 84/100

Let me talk a bit about Ryousuke Nakamura. For a long time, this guy was my hero. He started off as an assistant director to Monster, in my opinion a big reason why that series got such a ridiculously solid adaptation, and then in 2008 he came with the groundbreaking Mouryou no Hako. No TV-series […]

Kick Heart

Okay, so I didn’t want to exit 2013 without having seen Masaaki Yuasa’s Kick Heart. It’s only twelve minutes anyway, and I consider him to be one of the best anime directors out there. The story here is pretty silly and mostly serves as a backdrop, so I mostly want to talk about the nature […]

Everyone’s taste is different, and that’s a wonderful thing because that allows us to have so many different forms of media that all aim toward their own niche. Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Lovecome o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru Review – 80/100

Noucome! You do not want to know how long I have been waiting for a series like this. More than half a decade, at the very least. Finally a series comes along and puts the incredibly overused harem genre in its place. And it actually does it well. Thank you! So to elaborate: the harem […]

Tamayura – More Aggressive Review – 75/100

I’m not going to dedicate a post for my impression for the final three episodes of this series. It was just too boring to write much about. I guess that that gives a pretty accurate indication of what I think about this series. Right at the start of Tamayura’s second season, I asked one question: […]
